Clunk" on full steering lock

I read on the forum some time ago about some checks when test driving to avoid potentail problems.
One was to make sure you tried full steering lock both ways, and listen for a clunk or some other such noise.
I cannot find the thread now.
I've driven a possible purchase and it makes a clunk noise on full left lock.
Is this a potential serious problem? Any ideas as to thje cause so I can get the dealer to sort it?

I think this refers to 4 wheel drive Bongos, where if the CV (constant velocity) joints are on their way out, you will get a clunking type noise when turning tight at low speed. I'm sure someone else can add to this (I have a 2WD!)

Hi buyabongo,
If a cv joint is failing it can click on full lock (if you turn left, its the lefthand joint)
The cv joint is protected by a rubber sleeve,(a cv boot) these are known to split, which means that the grease that is packed into the cv joint can escape as the wheels turn,eventually causing the joint to fail, or at worst seize
Have a quick look into the wheelarch area on the suspected wheel to see if there is any telltale sign of splattered grease in the wheelarch.
Turn the wheel to full lock have a peak at the cv boot, to see if it is split, or even worse, if it looks new!
Some dodgy types will fit a new boot,and pack it with grease to disguise a worn joint,but as the grease thins with the heat generated by motion, the clicking invariably starts again.

I bought a cv joint for £37 off e bay (jap spares i think), mine is a none abs type.
Then did the job myself

CV joints don't usually "clunk" - they definitely make a clicking noise when they are failing. Does it make more than one clunk? - I would check the suspension, it may just be something silly like the spring winding up.
