Broken exhaust manifold stud

Has anybody out there attempted to change a broken exhaust manifold stud?any tips or advice,

This is quite common, especially the number one stud, and can be done if you know anything about helicoils - if not, it's better to let a garage do it.
By the way, welcome to the site and don't forget to put your location in your profile, cos' it helps people giving you advice (not much use recommending a garage in Leeds if you live in Dover :lol: :lol: )

You have a few options:

Two nuts or a stud extractor if there is any thread protruding.
Weld a bit of bar on the remains - works well if you can weld.
Drill it and try a stud extractor (never worked for me).
Drill it out and retap or helicoil. If you centre the drill very carefully and go up in stages you can usually save the thread. Then use a longer stud with threadlock and put a nut on the end. The long stud goes deeper than the original so you can get enough turns to hold.
