Hi all my 96 bongo has just started to perform strangely regards the auto box if I am driving say at 50- 60mph and the box is in over drive if i start to accelerate operating the pedal very gently the engine seems to over rev up to approx 4000 rpm as if on a manual car when the clutch was slipping then it will start to grab on to 4th gear it never done this before I went on a 300 mile round trip yesterday the fluid was changed approx 2000 miles ago and is at the correct level.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and if so what was the cure.
Cheers all.

If I was you, I would get it checked out by an auto box specialist asap - If it goes totally it will cost you alot.
£1,700 approx for a reconditioned box and labour

You're a bit impatient bongopatrol........
Firstly - it doesn't have an overdrive - it's a torque convertor lockup and it sounds to me that it's faulty or the sensor which activates it is.
Does the "HOLD" light flash????

Sorry BP I don't know about the lockup operation, I just know there's a temperature sensor in the same circuit as the glowplug relay which locks out the lockup until the coolant temperature gets to a predetermined level.
There's also a fact sheet on the gearbox and it's sensors in the member's area

I'm a bit confused about your expressiopn 'overdrive'
The gearbox should be normally be operated without prssing the hold function.
If you drive without the hold function it will automatically use the highest gear it is comfortable with.....you'll do about 65 - 70mph at about 2500 revs. put your foot down slowly and the van will go faster and the revs will increase.
If you put your foot down hard the gearbox will go down a gear to give you more revs for overtaking etc.
If you press the hold botton the engine will change down to the next lower gear and stay there until the hold botton is disengaged (press it again).
If you are driving in 'D' with the hold light on this means that you are driving in third gear and to drive at 55 - 70mph you are going to have to rev like hell.
Hope this has helped. If you'd like to discuss it over the phone please pm me and I'll give you my number.
good luck

Great news Bongopatrol
If you take a sharp left out of your drive (or a sharp right) and follow the signs, you'll arrive at SUMMER.
