please - SHOW BLINK-CODES! than - i try "translatet it"...

They were actual code numbers the 2002 is OBDII compliant. but cannot recall fault codes, they were stuck in a 'loop'. Just driven another 100miles for a cold but lovely day out to the coast and back and all is good. Better mpg too.

I suspected it wasn't an issue with the gearbox. Unfortunately I just don't think I'm going to find a mechanic over there who can speak enough English to make use of all this. I have decided to tow it back to the UK. I'm going over at Easter. Eastbourne would be convenient. Thanks for the recommendation. Alacrity, can you PM me your details please?

A more generic question re towing, but hoping someone can help. I've got access to a land rover and a flatbed trailer. Anything specific I need to know about towing a Bongo back through Germany and France on a flatbed? Heights, or weights etc? On my license I can tow up to 8,250kg.

Torque the trailer wheel nuts, check tyre pressures, and position the Bongo on the trailer so that the 'nose weight' is ( idealy) between 5/7% of the actual weight of the loaded trailer, but not above the maximum for the Land Rover.

So position the bongo towards the front of the trailer?

That will depend on the trailer, but load Bongy facing forwards and check the nose weight then adjust as necessary.

Another quick question. Will I need towing mirrors? I'm hoping not as the bongo isn't as wide as a caravan?!

I would think not as Bongy is no wider than a Land Rover, but here's some info:

A little update. I'm in Czech, with a trailer and a Land Rover. Unfortunately the Land Rover's alternator went on the way over, just to make things a little more interesting, so our little trip is going to be extended while we get this fixed!

A further question: If Bongo isn't starting, is it safe to put it in neutral to winch it onto the trailer?

As to pulling the Bongo on yes not a problem
Its only extended running as the oil pump in the transmission is driven by the engine side, if that is not turning then oil isn't being pumped around the transmission hence no cooling and the clutches and gears can overheat if its being towed for any distance at any speed.

Update for you all.

We got stunews' s Bongo in here & it was, as thought clearly not a trans issue. We checked the pump fuel filter - clean, put fuel in it as it was showing none (guage not working) only for the engine to stop completely 1/2 mile later necessitating a short tow back to work. We got permission to replace the fuel filter & on removing found it 50% full of water & rusty inside. Now we knew what the issue was & again got permission to drop the tank & clean it as best we could. On removing we only got less that 20 litres of fuel/water out (into a clear 20ltr container) & that was 50% rusty water. Given we had added fuel it must have been pretty much only water in the tank when we got the vehicle. The tank was cleaned as best we could - a rusty tide mark inside - refitted & fresh fuel added. All runs well again luckily for the owner.

We have suggested the fuel filter is changed again at 500 miles & a correct filler cap fitted as there is effectively very little in the way of a filler cap on it at the moment, just the very broken remains of a universal plastic one.
