Its a 3 cylinder 6 piston,2 stroke diesel engine.

.............and they were supercharged! We used to have a recovery truck powered by one of these things - unbelievable torque but what a NOISE! :D

A better choice would be the 2.5lt Renault Master engine (which has a reputation for surviving major abuse and being generally bullet proof) fitted with the 6 speed Quickshift auto box.

Trouble is you'd have to convert the Bongo to front wheel drive.

You couldn't fit a TS3 in a Bongo let alone a Bongo engine bay.

Not revved enough to sound at it's best

3 cylinders 6 pistons no cylinder heads...........and a noise that makes a Ferrari sound like a Ka.

But only just better sounding than a Deltic.

Who says diesels don't sound nice?

Trouble at t'Mill wrote:ICB, no harm in topping up with 15W since, as you say, there's a fair chance the remaining oil has thinned a bit over time.

What I was trying to say was that for the Bongo - which I understand has 5W 30 oil specified - a winter equivalent would be probably 0W - 30; ie thinner.

However, with full oil changes, they seem very happy with a slightly thicker than recommended oil: 10W 40 which is easier to obtain.
Yep I'm with you mate, I reckon 10W-40 is probably a better choice for our climate anyway, 5W would make sense in the colder regions of Japan though.

Apart from the facts that it's too big, heavier, hard to source and a pig to maintain, overly complex and technically way out of date. Great eccentric engine design though.

The 1UZFE (Lexus LS400, SC400) is the obvious choice, completely bomb proof, relatively compact and light for a 4L V8 (has been fitted to MX5s  ), cheap as chips (little demand as they rarely go wrong, buy a good donor for well under £1k), quiet (unless you want to fit exhausts that give a lovely howl), great torque curve, etc. Not sure of the technical aspects of mating up running gear and ECU issues, etc. but it definitely appeals and it shouldn't be too bad given the RB25DET (Nissan Skyline) has been done. In fact it would surprise me if someone in Japan or Russia hasn't done it already.

If one wanted similar torque to the most powerful Rootes engines but with 140more bhp, lots more refinement and maintainability then the 2UZFE (Toyota Land Cruiser) would be the way to go.
