Wondered about that as there's a spring 'involved'. Tried very gingerly but wouldn't give and didn't want to push my luck any further . . . .

IF ... you are going to try it before fitting the pump .. generally Lucas ATF conditioner comes in 591ml bottles (just over half a litre) .. so why drain out a litre or two ..??
Unless your fluid is well over the full mark (checked while warm & engine running) then it should be OK ..
I think they are talking about a ATF transfer pump, (hope so)

I would imagine that The SA filter you are looking for is M303066 not MB 433425.
Good Luck.

I've just had a response to an email I sent to Ian. Apparently I'm not the only one with the fuel filter problem:

Yeah sorry - I meant the transfer pump.
Great news re the fuel filter. Let us know if it solves the problem.

You will not believe this.
I ordered a replacement fuel filter from mazdabongo on the advice of Ian M. It's just arrived in the post. I took it out of the carton next to the 'faulty' one I got from the bongofury shop earlier AND that fuel filter has SPONTANEOUSLY created the required space for the sediment trap!
It's just been sitting on my garage bench for a few days and maybe the change in temperature (it's certainly not hot in my garage) has caused the internals to relax! What do you think of that? It's unbelievable but true. Here are the photos:

I think you might be shoving your Tape Measure up the Wrong Hole.

Wondered why I'd chosen the name 'terminally bewildered'. You're right. Lost the plot already. Oh b****r. Will go and have a lie down now . . . .

Ok.... So alternator checked. Output is within the tolerances.
On a whim, I used some lucas transmission conditioning fluid. Worth a shot ey! I added this to existing fluid - red and clear on dip stick (no burnt toast smell). Once added the fluid was over "f" by 1litre.
Unfortuntely, this didn't solved the problem. So thought it best to suck out the excess fluid.
The dip stick is still red - however the fluid removing is a brown/opaque colour - a very strong coffee colour. Still no burnt smell.
What do you reckon? It could be the Lucas has coloured it this way I suppose.

The gearbox was changed in feb - new fluids were put in then.
