Clearly there is a serious fault with the gearbox and I think you are running the risk of being fobbed off with yet another quick fix. I would let the garage "repair it", keep a diary of key events and notes of what you have seen, and then head straight to an automatic transmission specialist for a second opinion.

Seen torn/pierced filters many times before where people have bodged them up to get them going to sell them. Whenever I see them it is nearly always with an owner who has just bought the car.

Very good advice. At some point (without much delay) I think you have to put the result in writing to the dealer. At that point, you want to have considered what outcome you want (return vehicle as unfit, get gearbox mended by specialist, compromise and meet cost half-way etc.)

Thank you for all of your posts regarding my bad luck, I am deeply upset and very annoyed as all of the fun i imagined it would be has not happened...
I will take everybodies advice as I also believe there is an underlining problem after all not all of you can be wrong.
I will let him do what he needs to then ask him if he feels every thing has been done correctly. Then i will take it straight to the Ford Garage that I Know where they will check it all over.. If they feel or find for that matter that the problem is more serious i will get them to write a full report of which i will show the garage from where the bongo was bought and if no joy will then speak to trading standards and take legal action... also the ford garage should be able to tell that the filter and oil have been replaced as they will be new.

I phoned him today to ask if the filter had been delivered, he said yes but they had sent a diesel one as the trans guy must have thought mine was a diesel..mmmm not filling me with confidence.

I am probably wrong but I was under the impression that the diesel and petrol versions use the same automatic transmission. Alacrity would know.

I haven't seen a V6 in the workshops here, but I suspect you are correct although it is always theoretically possible the filter differs, manufacturers sometime do unfathomable things - although I somehow doubt it on the dear old Bongo. However, if you include the (more common) Nissan variants of this transmission, my parts listing for this tranny lists 10 differnt types/styles of filter! So it is more likely they just supplied the wrong one.

Interestingly it lists the 92- transmission as having an extra solenoid on the valvebody, six instead of five, due to the converter lockup being 'controlled' in its operation as opposed to straight forward on/off (feeling like a fifth gear) that most of us are used to. Clearly the pre-faclift Bongo didn't have this, can anyone with a late model let us know if the lock-up still feels like a fifth gear of if it is less noticeable?? It may be that it wasn't fitted to the Bongo as it is van technology so they were less concerned with finesse.

The Bongo Friendee/Ford Freda production started in 1995 and the facelift/electronic fuel pump in 99 (or late 98). a 92> might still be the old Bongo Brawny with a different 'box

Hi, yes the very same i would imagine. It's now had a roof conversion and looking very nice.. . It's now in a auto gearbox centre in poole having major surgery (RECONED) hope to hve it back before the weekend. The van is amazingly clean and i have spent quite some time making it look that way so i will be extremely happy to get it back .

If its back in time will you be popping up to Southern Softies in Merley? We're hoping to be up there for a few hours after work Saturday evening and I would love to have a look at your roof.

We still went for a Tin Top V6 (couple of years older than yours and not as clean ) and if we dont get on with the low roof we will be doing some saving for a roof.

Just in case you still log in. Did the dealer in Southborne pay for the recon box.

I only ask, as I have just purchased from same dealer and having problems in the first week of ownership.
