Yes, just noticed you were up there! We had been to see 'tonic' in Ripley, and Vince at Ace Campers in Alfreton, then decided to head up the M1 to J29, and come back over the Peak from there - taking me through old stamping grounds of fifty years back. There was a real blizzard between 28 and 29 on the M1, which stopped just before Chesterfield, and then came and went again a few times, up on the higher ground across the eastern Pennines. We parked for a nice hot lunch (isn't the Bongo wonderful?) in a layby with southerly views to die for, about a mile or so before Surprise View, heading for Hathersage. Now, if you know the area there, you might be able to answer a question for us?? A mile or so north of us, across rising open ground, we could see a big earthwork on the horizon - like one of those "secret" cold war regional seats of government jobbies. A bit incongruously, considering where it was, there was a small buliding on top of it, with smoke belching from a chimney in its middle. Ramblers' hut? Shepherd's hut? Park warden's hut?

Any idea? It's got Mrs M (Di) particularly intrigued. I'll get no peace until she knows the answer - and I don't plan to drive back, trek over and knock on the door

EDIT 12/2/10: Spent most of yesterday evening pouring over maps, Google Earth, and online images - otherwise we would have been driving back today Not cold war but carboniferous! It could only have been Higger Tor, with rock structures ("the Shelter Rocks"?) on the top looking like a building in silhouette against the skyline. Somebody was up there with a fire though. BTW, correcting my original post on this, Dark Peak I now see - not High Peak. We will be going back in the spring, to have a look down from the top - views look great in online photos. (Our Elecsol L.B. will be used again - don't want to totally post off-topic )

Yes could have been Higgar Tor or Carl Walk the site of an ancient neolithic hill fort. Not quite sure of position of your layby. Can you describe layby more.

No it was definitely Higger Tor. Carl Walk is off at the wrong angle from where we were. First layby on the left, after sharp left over Burbage Brook travelling from the Fox Inn, Longshaw, towards Hathersage - parked and looking out the offside, north west across Hathersage Moor.

After posting this morning, I worried about just who was up on there with a camp fire, in snow storms middle of February? Could be anybody in summertime but, unless some rock climbers were camping up there, it seemed possibly fishy at this time of year, and with Sheffield very close downwind.......???

So, I took a deep breath and called S Yorks Police (Higger Tor is just in S Yorks). For some reason they passed it straight back to Derbyshire, and five minutes later I got a call back from a Derbyshire D.C. Felt a bit of a chump but fortunately he was taking it very seriously - said "we get some strange people up on the moor... (well, we were there for starters) ....and right now, there's the 'T' word to consider". That was what I had in mind, too, so I was very glad he reacted that way. He also said "..sod's law says if we don't check it out, it will be the one we should have checked. Do you have the coordinates?" Called him back with them a few minutes later, and he said "...don't worry, sorted them out and the park rangers are already on the way up there to check it out for us. They couldn't explain it either and were also concerned."

Don't expect I'll hear the result but anyway I was very impressed. David Edwards and bongoplod, what do you reckon?

Token on-topic bit: Elecsol leisure battery

Still confused as to location. From Fox House Inn Going towards Hathersage,after Burbage Brook there is only one big car park on right hand side of road a short distance before Suprise view. Nothing on left hand side of road no car park or layby.

Hi al & chris. Have just re-checked, and am going to PM two satellite maps to you next - PM, rather than further clutter this thread. Sure, the big Surprise View car park is the only marked parking along that stretch of Hathersage Road but on the south side, further back to the east before the bridge and sharp right, there are several good stretches of "hard shoulder", if you prefer, where ramblers park to go down to the marked footpath at Burbage Brook - then either up to the moor via the bridge or downstream to the Padleys. We were in one of those hard shoulder stretches. You can see a parked van in the same general area, in one of the satellite photos I'll now send. Cheers, David

Not that I need a new LB but weighing up for when I need a replacement......

When I was looking at getting mine, the dimensions of the 110 looked too big to fit in my battery tray - LxWxH: 353 x 175 x 190 mm, which is why I ended up going for the 100 instead.

That 110 Elecsol would probably be just a midges too big at 353mm, the Numax at 13mm shorter is tight to wiggle into position.

Still, I suspect 100Ah of good LB will actually give better service than 110Ah of not so good LB (as I suspect my Numax may be) will

Oh well........ I will make my choice when the time comes...... at least I got a measured feedback to satisfy my curiosity.... cheers folks....

The 100 fits easily, it's nearly 50mm shorter, and you're not losing much power.

On that basis & with the figures above geoff, do you reckon the elecsol 110 ah would fit the willinton tray then?
