Diameter of 215/55/17 is 668mm
Daimeter of 215/65/15 is 660mm
4mm isn't going to fill the arch very much

As Scanner says - it's an illusion............

I found 16" to be a good size the visual rim/tyre balance is better and there is a good choice of tyres with the right specs at reasonable cost. The slightly lower profile needed also gives a good balance of ride comfort and handling.

Erm....as I said too I believe when quizzed

But really it's not all illusion. The major factor is that the 17" alloy
is bigger than the 15" rim. In that sense, the wheel does fill the wheel arch more. With this particular style of alloy, the large area of plain aluminium has an enhancing effect. I believe a little extra girth on the tyre also gets noticed more than you would think, especially as it has the rim of the arch as a nearby 'datum' line (assuming you notice that kind of thing at all - the wife doesn't give a stuff!). Another point not mentioned so far is that the 215 profile fills out the arch area noticeably more than a 195.
Blimey, reading the above, how sad am I (don't answer that)
