Well mine starts the whole testing thing on Monday
Starting from the pressure testing the coolant systen through to removing the head and testing that for cracks.
Exactly what is involved in the tests is over my head, thats why its in the doctors.
The garage have been kind enough to let me use a loan Bongo so at least the withdrawal symptoms will ease

sorry both you warriors are having worries - its a bugger. Would a diesel engine specialist be able to help dreamwarrior (e.g. maybe the injector is misbehaving?)

im confused with mine but the longer i sit and look under the seats the more im inclined for a coolant problem/head. left overnight lost about 1/4 litre of water. filled up this morning to fill line. just got back after 8 hours at work bongo been stood all day and lost another 1/4 litre but no smoke from cold or lumpy running. would it be hard to compress the water when cold therefore some misfire or would it only do it when system warmed up and pressurized.
mike i am looking into getting injectors checked out before i commit and remove head.dosnt look 2 bad 2 remove and found a company who will pressure test it.going to leave it till after bash. if it goes t*ts up when there got aa relay.

Maybe you aren't loosing water.
I think the 'fill' lioneo r maximum level on the header tank is calibrated for hot water.
So if you top it up to the max level when it's cold and then run the engine to operating temperature, chances are it'll loose the excess water.
Mine always shows between min and max.
I once topped it up when it was cold to the max level, only to find the level had dropped again, never topped it up again since then and the level has stayed there.
This may not be the way your's is behaving, but I thought it would be worth mentioning it.
BTW, you can't compress water, but it does expand and contract with heat.

That's exactly how mine behaves and I have no overheating problems.

touching plenty of wood and fingers crossed shes working fine again.dont know what it was or what bit i changed worked but there you go.
coolant levels havnt dropped, thermostat working fine all flushed out and bled system, repaired leaking hose. one slight hickup with smoke yesterday but by time i got out of van it had gone.
people i spoke to said it could be a leaking valve stem oil seal? all i know ive spent a few hours taking bits off and rebuilding parts changed lots of bits and had fun with the thermostat. it is accessable from above and you dont need to remove the propshaft (4x4)
early days yet tho. the amount of diesel and injector cleaner ive put through also may have played a part, but who knows maybe ill never find out or maybe 5 miles down the road it will blow up.
i know if its the head im quite prepared to d.i.y as it dosnt look that daunting a job to do after a good dose of looking at.

Valve stem seals 'seal' the oil/air in the cam box from getting into the intake manifold around the valve's ''stem''
It fails to do this for one of two reasons.
1) seal is totally gone allowing oil to run down valve's stem
2) seal is on way out and the suction / vacuum of the intake manifold pulls oil down from the cam box above, around valve stem and into intake.
Problem with this on your bongo mike, if its (1) it wont fix itself, and if its (2) it wont have vacuum as being a turbo powered intake, its got positive pressure, not negative vacuum, so would blow air into the cam box, not suck oil out.
I must say to everyone on the list I have seen mikes bongo smoking, its not his imagination, but its got me beat, and while not being a bongo engine expert, I have had a fair few engines in bits in my time.

it gets better lez cause its stopped smoking now so scratch your head over that one. its back to normal now no coolant loss after the bash this weekend 230 miles, no oil loss, steady at max and fuel consumption just worked out after charity to be 28,6mpg so no fuel loss there. that was at 65 to 70 mph most of the way there and steady 60 coming back.

I am in a similar place & its' not a happy one.

changed head & gasket but now getting lumpy start-up & white smoke for first couple of mins.
Off to motor factors it is, then, to buy some injector cleaner.
Then fuel filter.
Then glow plugs.
etc etc, ad infinitum.......
