Such a shame. We actually caught the ferry from Gijon to Saint Nazaire on Sunday 7th September and then using the Le Havre to Portsmouth route 4 days later so the cancellations wouldn't have affected us on our way back. We "won" a free return crossing fron Portsmouth to Le Havre so the Gijon option was added to save some driving home. As it's only a 250 mile drive to link the 2 ferry routes it cut out more than 600 miles driving for us on the way back. This would still be worth considering as a good option for anyone considering a visit to northern Spain and no doubt would work out a lot cheaper than the normal Brittany Ferries option.

I looked around for you in the town as it isn't so big but your hunger for visiting the sites would no doubt have kept you off of the streets. Bumping into your van reminded us of when we drove into an Aire in France 2 years ago and we were absolutely gobsmacked to find ourselves parked within yards of Bungle, our Bongo we had sold the previous year!

Stunning photos of stunning locations, food, wine etc and lots of information to go with them. You really need to be earning back the cost of your holidays (or at the very least the cost of Muzette's ice creams) by compiling a book.

Inspired to follow in your footsteps on this one - we've been to a few of the places (and I've been to a few more in my previous life on two wheels) but seem to have missed an awful lot out.

We've got Arles, Nimes and Avignon on the short list for the next time we can afford to go abroad, and are now adding Marseilles because the The Église des Réformés looks very similar to Truro Cathedral.

Was it raining when you parked up? If it was we would have been in El Capricho, that was the nearest we could find to park. If it wasn't raining we were probably in one of the shops opposite Bongy, the ones selling all manner of touristy fare

LD Lines still appear to be operating the Gijón to St Nazaire route, it's just the Poole routes they've axed.

Yes, we had Nîmes and the Pont du Gard on our list but didn't quite get round to them but they're on next year's list together with Arles and a few other places like the Canal du Midi and the Fonserannes water slope.

I was pleasantly surprised by Marseille, I only wanted to see the Château d'If and I had a bad feeling about the place (in advance) but it was a pleasant city to spend a day strolling around. There's plenty of underground parking but none suitable for Bongy which is why we elected to leave the car at Avignon (there's loads of secure parking at the TGV station) and let the train take the strain

You didn't happen to see any bears (yes proper bears) around did you while you were at our place.
Just been talking to the next door neighbor and she tells me that the farmer up the road is pretty sure he has had a couple of sheep killed by a bear up the mountain at the back.
Think I'll get a peephole fitted to the door smartish

BTW it looks like LD are also pulling the Le Havre service as well. Bit of a bugger as we use it a lot.
The BF Economie is a joke, still a lot more expensive than what LD were charging.

No, no bears. Are you sure it wasn't the gypsies? When we were there (really bad timing) it was the eve of the August 15th bank-holiday for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and there were gypsies pouring into Lourdes from everywhere. By the morning when we left, the Gendarmes were stopping anyone in a white van towing a caravan by Lourdes airport and preventing them from going any further as Lourdes itself was absolutely rammed.

Yes, LD spewing their routes is a real bummer. No doubt Brittany Ferries will scrap the Economie fares now they've no competition again. Although there's still Condor Ferries running to Saint-Malo from Weymouth and Poole, not checked their prices but they surely can't be more than BF....

I've just booked BF from Santander to Plymouth as foot-passengers (you'll understand why when you see the photos) and it's almost £500.00 one-way for two with a cabin

There's a gypsy camp a few miles north of Lourdes where they all seem to gather at times. We saw a gathering a couple of years ago in northern France, absolutely thousands of them clogging up the roads. The gendarmes and CRS were having a whale of a time.

£500, that robbery, wouldn't it be cheaper to fly?

Yes, Condor is an option but they are far more expensive than LD, we were getting returns in the winter for around £190 with a cabin on the overnight outward trip.
Probably have to resort to a cheapy from Dover and put up with the extra driving.

It would, EasyJet will be about £43.00 each Manchester to Bilbao (we can't book yet, this is for next July). So we'll be flying out and ferrying in, £492.00 on BF. You see, it'd be boring coming & going the same way. You'll understand when you see the pics It's for a special occasion and we've offloaded Muzette too
