I've just had a reply from Shell Island over their 2011 opening plans and, although they won't know for sure until the last weekend in October, they normally don't open until around 20th March.

I don't know how they are for groups though and whilst it has immense views from the top its a bit slopey on the main field. On the hook up bit its flat with a few hard standings and they are seperated into 'fields'..at that time of year they may let out say one whole section.
The last time we went we were on one of these fields closest to the top loo block, and with noone else there it was practically ensuite

Eisteddfa is a great site, but I don't think it is open in February

Oh thats a shame :( They do open beginning of March though, I wonder if they'd be persuaded to open early for a group..or if they are bound by insurance details (possibly :( )

Hi all.

Had a bit of a recce trip out to Snowdonia this weekend, checking out some sites today after an overnight stop at Llyn Gwynant Campsite, where a couple of other Bongos were doing their best to get away from it all. (Happy B'day Chell & Debbie - What A Cake!! =D> ) Beautiful location on the north shore of a lake beneath towering scenery but soggy underfoot, prone to flooding, no leccy hook ups, not open all year & - most worryingly - a stricktly adhered to No Music Policy. As we found out after a quiet word from the warden. They do have a barn that could be used in february at £150 per night, parking up space nearby is a bit limited though. . . .

We also had a look at a Cae Du, a very nice site half a mile from the pictuesque Beddgellert. They won't take group bookings under any circumstances. Black Rock Sands seemed a reasonable place but had a little frosty reception when mentioning there could be 20+ vans & won't entertain any large numbers 2 weeks either side of easter.

Last stop was at Penrhyndeudraeth, a couple of miles from Portmereion but much too small for what we need & failed to have any kind of Wow Factor. :(

My thoughts at the moment are to do Shell Island (keeping us all together could be tricky though as they don't take bookings) or go back to Bryn Gloch, which ticks all the boxes around the weekend of April 10th, where we had a very succesfull do two years ago.

Any thoughts appreciated

Just had a brain wave Munkey. What about a site called Nantcol Waterfalls site. It has been modernised recently, sporting a new flashy toilet and shower area (dodgy portacabins are no more, thank god) and they have electric hookups. Now this is access from the opposite side of the junction to Shell Island. Large, large field with an acr river running through. They have a small shop now for coffees and bits an bobs.

The downside. Access is up a narrow road leading to the mountains of snowdonia and I don't think it was that cheap. But, we were there at Summer and it is a really beautiful spot. Access to the waterfalls and Campfires are allowed. Whoop, whoop.

It is tricky for caravans, but there were lots up there so it must be possible.

Also it aint far to PM and Harlech, Shell island and other places. God I love Wales. Can't you tell. :D

We're in at Bryn Gloch!. :D

They really did their best last time to not only put up with us but also look after us as well. Had an email back today from the site.

Nice to hear from you again.

We will have availability for your group for the weekend 10th April.

The cost will be £19 per van per night. Electric hook up, water, drainage, awnings, extra adults, children and dogs are included in this price.

Plus the West Highland Railway steam line runs along the bottom field of the site & am negotiating with them to charter a train - or at least a couple of carriages to chauffeur us down to Portmeirion on the saturday morning.

Game On Gang!!!

Indeed it is. :)

All pitches have hookups, even if you have no LB, its a good idea to bring a cable & fan heater to have a taste of free leccy in the Bongo when its a bit chilly. :)

Not the cheapest of places around but you get what you pay for (& at least they'll have us!).

I'll be locking this thread soon & starting a fresh one once all details are confirmed.
