Being able to use the stereo with the keys out of the ignition?

I did say i had a very limited knowledge of such things! So the power that drives the unit comes from the switched live, and the permanent live is for the memory only? In that case i'd use a toggle switch or summat then!

If my very limited electrical knowledge understands that right, then surely the stereo still sources it's power from the L/B, yet the switched live sources it's power from the main battery? (which would be isolated via ignition off). Or have i missed summat? :?
The permanent live feed (pin 4) is not the main feed - it is purely to keep the preset memories. If you wire this through the ignition switch then you will lose the presets every time you turn the ignition off.

The point of connecting the radio to the LB is to be able to use it while parked up for the night without flattening the main battery, therefore both feeds need to be connected to the LB. This can't be done directly through the ignition switch. It could be done via a relay but then you would still have to have the key in the ignition and turned to ACC to operate it - hence the simpler option of just fitting a switch.

Edit.... too slow... :)

Yep - that's the plan - to run the radio off the LB when parked up. I've got another question though #-o

I've got a bank of 4 rocker switches that light up when on (i.e. fog light switches) - one for the headrest DVD players (which drain the battery if I leave the switch on), one for the stereo (likewise), one for the voltmeter and one for the reversing sensor display (OK, that one should really be wired into the ignition). Trouble is, they light up like a Christmas tree when driving along and its a bit distracting. I don't need to know the switches are on when I'm driving, so I'd like the lights off then, but come on automatically if I switch off the ignition without turning the rockers off.

Is there any way of breaking the earth to the switches when the ignition is on, and making it when ignition is off?

The problem seems to be that the unit can only be manually switched into "standby" and not switched off completely? I have a Sony head unit (fed from the L/B) and hitting the "OFF" button switches the unit to standby holding "off" for 5 seconds switches it off completely...I wonder if the same applies to the Aldi unit?
