Notice the dark staining on the head next to the end of the exhaust manifold, below the oil filler - particularly noticeable in photo 2.

That's right, it is the typical staining that builds up when the stud has sheared. Sometimes the stud looks OK because the stud head's still there, but the stud itself is damaged.

Had Bongo back tonight having been in today to get the manifold stud sorted. They managed to get the sheared stud out and a new one in with no bother. Apparently there was also a big nut (to the EGR pipe I think ) that they just couldn't shift without fear of shattering the whole manifold, so fingers crossed just changing the stud has done the trick. Everything else looked OK and there was no longer a leak when tested so no other work was needed. The engine no longer squeals at me anyway. Also had EGR blanked off so happy days!

I have been told that the nut can be pretty tight, so seems like a sensible decision.

HELP ANYONE with MANIFOLD STUD 1 EXPERIENCE! Just had the belts tightened at a nearby garage and the bongo is now silent. However there is an exhaust manifold leak with Black Sooty deposits around the Bleed hose pipe on the front passenger side and an oil leak I believe is exclusively from the EGR gasket on the driver side of the head (have not needed to top up even though the front side of the driver side of the head has a lot of black oil stains all the way down). Not to mention stud 1 is missing.






Image 1: Passenger side soot. No loose or missing bolts but not sure what is hiding under te heat shield.
Image 2: Definitely a leak coming from the EGR Gasket (have I got its name right(red circle)?). Does ayone know ehere I can get a replacement EGR gasket? Will the smaller one need replacing(yellow)?
Image 3: All of the black staining is on the front side and conected but I suspect that I need to clean an test drive to rule out a leak coming from the cylinder head gasket further below.

Should I remove the manifold before taking the bongo to a garage to check if it needs to be sent off for skimming (only place I know of is Lancashire as recommended in the factsheet)? Should a regular garage be able to deal with this with the factsheet and supped parts? If not does anyone know a Bongo garage near west NW london which has experience with this?

Hi - I believe the red circle in image 2 is around the inlet manifold. I had exactly the same gunk coming from this (which I believe finds its was there from the EGR pipe that's circled in yellow in your post). I had the inlet manifold removed, fresh gaskets and liquid gasket applied. It's cleared up that side of the engine a treat.

I hope the cylinder head gasket does't need to be changed. That sounds like a big job with the exhaust manifold as well. Will clean the spills and establish which bits are leaking on the inlet side..

I think that the vibration in the manifold are loosening everything in the inlet side via the EGR pipe. Has anyone managed to source a new exhaust manifold? Is naive to believe that having removed all of these vibrations and perhaps blanked th EGR, all that the inlet side may need is some tightening?
