If you haven't got the extra connection, Harry may be able to provide you with the bit you need to replace it if indeed you have got a ranger one fitted, if it's not a completely different fitting?

The bleed pipe comes out the head rather than the thermostat casing. That pipe goes to the turbo as I recall. The bleed pipe needs to be at the highest point which is the head.

This is the pipe that comes out the head. The wide outlet goes down via U-shaped pipe behind the alternator to the 'stat housing. One of the other outets is where the bleed pipe should attach. I think the other one may also go to the turbo, but I can't say without looking.



Still keen to find out what the score is on this one. It does sound like its a Ranger head/engine.

The garage tell me they have cleared the airlock and are almost certain the head gaskets gone.

Seems like it's time to let our good bongo go, alas.

Sorry to hear that. Changing the head gasket is worth doing, but then you should consider getting the head skimmed & pressure tested too which adds to the cost. If the head is cracked, then the costs start to go up considerably. It may be more cost effective to replace the whole engine, but then you take the risk that the 'new' one may also have a history of overheating. It sounds from the description of the head that it has already been changed before for one from a Ford Ranger.

Before making a decision, keep an eye on ebay to see what the van might be worth in its current state. BigBlackBeastieBongo is selling his with an overheating problem (see post in Scotland section). At least then you can see whether its cost-effective to get it repaired or sell it as it is.
