The bottom hose runs hotter when the stat is fully opened incidentally....
Just to clarify this point, this is my experience on one particular bongo, which had the centre core of the stat cut out as it was failing to open till it reached a constant 100 degrees.

Minutes before, the hose stayed luke warm/cool... The only reason the hose had any temperature in it, was simply down to heat soak from the other side of the stat.

The thermostat in question had effectively become nothing more than a bung, with the coolant passing over it quickly, with hardly any obstruction.

In a normal situation, where the stat is complete, the opening for the coolant is still quite restricted even with the stat fully open.

When the stat has the inner core removed, the temp guage reads just above the "c" mark, and doesn't really get much higher.

Perhaps Pat mc Kenna can confirm/correct me on this?

Hope this clears things up, glad we are all mates again....

You may know what i'm about to say cliffy.... I must be clear on this!

IN MY EXPERIENCE, Bongo's with KNOWN previous overheating issues all have cloudy/discoloured expansion tanks...

But, some variables come into play here...

Expansion tanks can be cleaned. Somebody, somewhere down the line may have removed the expansion tank at some stage, and cleaned it,if it had been previously discoloured.

Those tablets for de-scaling kettles with boiling water seem to make the tanks clear(ish) again.

Some bongo's with no known overheating issues can still have a discoloured expansion bottle, which i put down to wrong coolant/insufficient coolant-water ratio, coolant system not being flushed/changed as often as it should.

A link to the above and overheating problems is debatable.

One thing is for sure, particular bongo's seem to have issues, others have none whatsoever.

What i'm trying to imply is that, if one or more areas of the cooling system fail, then its a fair bet that other problems are to follow.

I can't help with the mildew issue i'm afraid cliffy, i've had no experience of that... (touchwood)

thanks again nice people.... :D

Well, well, well - Vanmanerik hiding in the wings 8)

The system cannot "vacuum" - the centre valve in the pressure cap(s) allow air in to the system during cooldown.

Coolant alarm is something i intend to get done soon, as BDC said it's a bongo must have.

Whats £100 odd quid compared to £500+.

Watch hoses, inspect when ever you can, consider getting a new rad, and thermostat. But most of all LISTEN TO YOUR BONGO, dont go along the lines of the old mechanics views (by turning up the radio) at any odd noises.

Get that alarm if you can afford it.

Too much info for me to respond on this one coco, if you decide to do a search input "mason AND alarm" into the search facility on techie stuff.....

Here's a link to whet your appetite...

Surely its been mentioned enough in the Forum to get it off the ground that a paid for advert will pay for itself now.
