yikes, sounds horribly dangerous!!

I've given Allan a ring and he's putting a pair of blanking plates in the post tomorrow morning - thanks Allan :D

This seems to me the neatest option.

There's also black smoke coming from the EGR which is probably a leak of some kind, so I've opted for both blanking plates. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Any idea where exactly these plates are placed? I know they'll come with instructions, but I'd like to do what I can, beforehand. Off to Cornwall on Friday, so hopefully I can have the job done before I leave and measure performance and mpg on the way down.

I'm still waiting to fit my Nick Skidmore kit, as I originally said on page one.......Hang about.....the post has disappeared.

I'll wait untill it gets a bit warmer, and the bongo is not needed for a couple of days, just incase.

edit: Still don't have a 36mm spanner for the job.

kitesurf, I've sent you a pm. Fitting the plates is pretty straight forward and doesn't take long.

Unless you intend to remove the complete EGR system then just blanking off the pipe onto the inlet manifold does the job - 10 minutes max :)

Gasket 20-306A is replaced by a solid plate:

Mine looks just like the exploded view

Hi Dandywarhol,

Just had a look at the exploded view showing which gasket to remove - and guess what.... the view shows only one of the fixing bolts, not only that but our Bongo only has one bolt on this flange too :?

Have you any idea what the thread size is as I will have to replace it (so long as the thread is not stripped) and...... can I use the gasket on the manifold end and just silicone seal the tube face or should I really use a gasket on both faces of the blanking plate (I am going to knock a stainless steel one up out of some odds and ends at work :D )

I am suspecting that not only is this missing bolt the source of the asthmatic wheezing at startup but may well cure the lumpy running at startup too - either that or I may have to change the glowplugs too

M6 by 1.25 by the look of it. Pretty standard size.

Thanks dandywarhol,

I will put one on at lunchtime and sort out a blank for later :)

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Guys!
I've been told by the mechanic today that the EGR is leaking and it needs to be welded. I've just found this thread and I hear you guys are blanking them off - but am I right in thinking you can't blank it if it's leaking? Would the whole thing need to be replaced or just welded? If it does need to be replaced, I can't seem to find it in the parts section in the exhaust bits.

Many thanks for your help in advance :):)

The place for blanking kits. They are also members on here.

I've still not fitted my Nick Skidmore kid.

EDIT: just noticed... see Doone's post above.

Hi all,

I must agree with wat Grahame said earlier, i blanked off my EGR with Allans blanking kit last week and i instantly noticed a change in the pitch or tone of the engine. I also think that it runs slightly quieter than it did before.

I do not know whether it has improved fuel economy but i would say that i thought there was a small increase in performance especially between 0mph and 40mph. The black smoke issue has now been greatly minimised on start up, just need to get the glowplugs done to stop the rest i feel.

So i would say I am more than happy that i spent 12 quid for a small increase in performance and less black smoke. Also thought the blanking was easy to do just a little fiddly!

Thanks Will. :)
I will find out more exact details of where the leak is and ask my mechanic what he can do.
If the valve is leaking, then Allans blanking plates will do the job. If it's the pipework that's leaking it'd depend where the leak was.
If the 2 plates are fitted, they completely isolate/seal the EGR valve and pipes, so eliminate all leaks associated with the EGR and pipes, without removing the EGR system itself.

Does anyone know if EGR Blanking is something that's relevant to a 2.0l petrol Bongo ? not being a mechanic i don't know.

Thanks

James
