Well dand mah doobries. Despite an ailing back I managed to remove the drivers side mirror and strip it down (I'm an old hand at it now

). Sure enough the plastic shaft had let go. But this time the locating lug at the top had snapped up, presenting a very tricky job esp. as I have lost all my v small drill bits and dont have a good minidrill either. But Using a magnifying glass and some v delicate work, I actually managed to drill the lug and the shift and pin/glue it back with araldite. I sleeved the lug locating barrel in brss tube as per the nearside in any case, to strengthen it against splitting (weakest link etc).
Put it all back together and both mirrors now seem to work perfectly. Lets hope that is the end of that.
So no £ spent and - with luck - 2 mirrors now stronger than original (I hope!)

Oh blow!! Damn and double blow. Went to use my new mirrors yesterday and the offside one - despite working perfectly on reassembly - is dead as a Dodo. No sound of motor working at all. So its strip down time again (when I can be arsed, which I cant right now). Wont speculate about causes until then.
Does anyone have details of the wiring diagram for the mirror feed. Not sure if I'd understand them anyway but if they were scannable and emailable I'd be grateful.

Waycar8 may have an idea with the wiring mike, i seem to recall that he did a little bit of investigating as to whether the mirrors could be linked to the "total closure" feature on his alarm.
No promises!... but he MAY be able to shed some light....
(could you let him know that last nights candle lit dinner with him was dreamy

)

I'm laid up with my back at present so cant even get on the PC for long before I have to give up (I can lie down, and stand, but not sit much). At least the mirror is dead so can be locked and left until I can face taking it off again (the other repair seems to be working fine.....so far).
re waycar8 - Aaaahm not doing you fancy go-between stuff fo you Mr. T. Y'all tell him yoself
I'll get back on BF once back mended - until then it'll probably remain quiet from the mikeonb4c corner (hurrah!)

Thought I'd revive this thread as had an interesting experience today.
I took the dead wing mirror off in the hope I could do something. Checked all the feeds using the multimeter (what a handy thing - should have got one years ago) and they were fine. Opened up the mirror gearbox to see what electrical stuff might have gone AWOL in there. removed the one electrical bit and it turned out to be a switch, with a lug on it that engages in a lughole (obviously) so that it is switched when the mirror reaches full travel (you can just hear the click of it when you open and close the mirrors in fact, now I know there is a switch).
Anyway, there was a slight but definite smell of burnt electrical stuff. The switch had a couple of little electrical components soldered as part of it. I'm no leccie so dont know ehat they are but it seemd to me I might as well take it out and reassemble the mirror. I could then attempt to renovate the switch as there's no chance of buying a new one.
So I unsoldered the green wire, took it out and reassembled the mirror. Whereupon the mirror seemd happy to lock into the open position instead of lfopping about as it had previously. It looks as though it can also be folded manually. A good result as far as I'm concerned.
So, Steve1259 if you havent sorted anything yet, this may give you a solution.
I'm now going ot get in touch with an electrical mate of mine and see if he might look at it and work out what the electrical components are if I post it to him. If so, he could see if he can get the switch working 'on the bench' then I could nip over and we could try and reinstate it in the mirror one weekend.
My only worry is why did it go in the first place. Its as though something overloaded and triggered it off but I cant think what, and why didnt a fuse blow if so. Better ask my mate to get some spare components in case it goes again on reinstall.

hmmn missed the last few posts on this thread before for some reason
anyway as for big d and the dinner, cant have been that dreamy, never got a second date
as for the wiring, cant help you as my research didnt extend to stripping the motor for mirrors.
Am I bovvered?! Well yes, actually...

Chaps, I've been following your thread with some interest as my driver's door mirror has just stopped folding in (as of yesterday). Oddly mine only stopped working after my friend commented that his drivers door mirror wont work electrically (which he thinks is something to do with getting knocked by passers by - is this true?).
So, post surf I get back in my van to find the mirror has been knocked and lo and behold the bl***y thing won't operate electrically! Spooky...
Read all your stuff, had a fiddle with it (took it off the outside etc), but no luck. Here's my symptoms: Won't fold in or out; no noise/response from the motor at all, but mirror adjustment works fine. Could it be jammed?
The idea of going to such lengths as to drill out the plastic widget etc seems like too much effort (and too many oppertunites for my ham-fists to bu**er it up!). Should I just lump it, or is there a simple fix?
PS: Mike you said at one point "zero cost", but how many man-hours did you spend?! I think I'd rather pay for a new mirror...

You have a good point simonsgonesurfing. If I was a lawyer on £300 ph I'd defintely go that way. But I'm not, so I have to get whatever buzz I can out of not spending the £ and managing instead to fix the seemingly unfixable. But yes, I'd love to just buy a new mirror and just plonk it on!
