Think I'll try and get the boys out of school early to get there in good time on Friday. I remember taking the Mold/Ruthin route once some years back and it was indeed stunning. I have a hankering for that as it'll make a change from the coast road - fuel costs be blowed!

Depends if you like driving or not.

The A55 is like a motorway and can get monotonous. The Mold - Ruthin - Betws-y-Coed route will test your driving skills in places. If you want to use the later just set your Sat Nav to Mold then when you get there change it to Betws-y-Coed.

In a heavily loaded 2WD Bongo......with a trailer......fully tooled up.........
With
my reputation.
Seriously though, is it a reasonably open road run as I'm happy sweeping up hill and down dale at 55mph on a good 'A' road, but don't want to be grinding my way through 1:3 mountain passes with snow and ice all around and dragging a trailer (I don't recall anything much like that last time I took that route but then again we came from Harlech so maybe didn't take in the exact route at the Snowdonia end).

It was some time ago when I used this route so as far as I can recall there are two steep climbs (but not 1 in 3). Both you have to tackle going north (hope your brakes are ok for going south). One is the drop down just before reaching the north side of Ruthin and I think the other is half way between Ruthin and Cerrigydrudion where you join the A5.

Option 4 for people with a bit more time on their hands is to go for the scenic option and take in the most north, south, east and westerly points of the mainland, just the 2,200 miles and 42 hours to complete
