After a run when the bongo is good and warm leave the engine running for ten minutes or so,then turn the ignition off, then back on to position 2 (ignition lights on) engine off. Leave ignition on for a few minutes, you should be able to hear the scavenger fan operating. You cant always hear it with the engine running, but leaving the ignition on means the circuit the fan runs from is still live,(switched live) But please dont poke around the engine bay with the ignition on! just in case the fan kicks in when you may have your fingers near it!......Good luck!

This is good positive stuff guys, thanks much.
The blocked tube is definatly the EGR valve. It's the only tube there without a home and the EGR has a home without a tube. It was perfect in length and just "lived" there when i reconnected it last week (i removed and blocked it again when the hold kicked in after 15 k's). However we will take a photo and try and post it. Is there any way this valve can be related to engine bay temp?
The mechanics of this bus are good and clean. All the original clips and so on are present and there are no telltale indications that she has been opened or worked on to any degree. Though i did have to replace the power steering input shaft oil seal on two occaisions; a simple enough job.

I'll check the fan operation as per.
As will i look at the fan sensor connections etc.

Ta for all that guys, i feel like there's progress even if it's eliminatory at present.
