Bongo Fury

Count me in for a full size spare - I used my space saver last summer and although it did the job would be happier with a full sized steel.

I used mine at half-term and asked the chaps in the tyre place to check it over. Ther reckoned the side wall was perishing so I was going to buy a replacement but after reading this thread a full-size replacement is the answer. Anyone got a rim in the West Yorks/South Yorks area ?

I have to smile on ebay right now there is a space saver wheel on sale at £36 or thereabouts. Any takers? Better not leave mine out on the drive anymore now I know it is so valuable

My solution is not to bother about the spare at all (although you have to have one for legal purposes). Use a punture resistant sealant instead. There are 2 brands available, Punctureseal and Ultraseal, and it will cost about £70 to get the Bongo done. No more worry about punctures ever again!

Unless you have a blow out at speed that shreds the sidewall like what happened to me a few years back.

True. Sealant won't protect you against that. But it will protect from tyre slashers. And nails and glass in the street. I've seen a demo with a stanley knife through the tyre wall. This stuff works OK.

I'm up for a full size one........ Wheel of course!

A friend of mine bought a very late MG Rover car which for the price He actually bought it for was a bargain.A few weeks into ownership he unfortunately had a bad puncture.On entering the boot to get the spare out he didnt find a wheel at all just a can of puncture repair which You use once to "Reinflate the punctured tyre and inject the sealant mix into it" which in theory should be enough to get you back on the road.In His case the puncture was too bad for this so He was stranded.He was well chuffed.
I think I would always prefer to cart a spare round with Me pain in the arse to get at or not.

Still trying to find a full size spare for mine after searching several scrapyards.
Does anybody know if the Kia Sedona wheels are suitable? According to this site, http://www.alloywheelsinternational.com ... UIDE1.html, the Stud diameter of 114.3 and spigot of 67.1 are correct, but I don't know if the Offset is suitable - I understand the Bongo is 42 whereas the above site shows the Sedona as 35-42. Tyre size for the Sedona is 215/65x15. There are a couple of Sedonas in the scrapyards.

I had to call out the breakdown service last week and he informed me that a number of new french cars are not now fitted with a spare at all. I wonder how the legal requirement will relate to that.

This is a common misconception.
IT IS NOT a legal requirement to have a spare wheel and never has been. IF you DO have a spare wheel, then it has to be as legal as the road wheels viz-a-viz tread depth and coverage..

Mike why are you replacing your 17inch alloys for 15inch? I'm thinking of changing my 15inch alloys for 17 or 18inch alloys, not quite decided as yet.

After checking my spare the space saver looks decidely dodgy and the wheel itself seems as if it needs waxoling or something, so I guess it has been acting as a floor pan protection for the past 10 years. I actually am loathed to use the spare unless absolutely necessary since in the past with other vehicles I don't like the thought of changing wheels at the side of the road and it has usually meant totally emptying the boot first ( not all cars are as well designed as the Bongo) and I would only change a spare to get me to a garage anyway therfore I carry a can of the sealent and inflate stuff (about 4 Quid from CPC) and a mini tyre inflator (another 4 quid from CPC) I wonder though if there are any other cars out there especially at scrapyards that could provide a cheap source of full size spares since as previously mentioned the sealent cannot help you with bigger punctures

A mate of mine was going to Bellhills the other day, so I asked him to price a full-size spare. He was told only a front wheel was suitable, as the rears are larger, and won't fit in the recess.

Apparently they fit them with a new tyre (£75), and the wheel is £20, so looking at £95 from them!!

Anyone know if this front wheel only business is correct?
