bit sad and lonely i know but.......
I put some diesel in a container and left it outside and waited till ice formed on the bird bath. the diesel was not affected.
I also drained the tank to get rid of any water.
still the same.
so the next thing is to service the van. trouble is it only happens aound chrismas so tracking down the cause will be my lifes mission.
