If it is the heater circuit then soaking it is not going to do any good.
Chances are that the sensor is still controlling your fueling just that the heater side, used to bring the sensor up to closed loop faster, is not working.
Take it to your garage and ask them to do a gas analysis if its is in range then you can ignore the fault, stick a piece of tape over the light, if not then you should change the sensor else you may damage the cat.

Jeebers thats a scary price. Shame a £15 ordinary OBD scanner won't do

That only lists bongo between 2001 and 2005 and the plug looks the same shape as the £15 one that I bought.

2001 required vehicles be fitted with a standardized socket to J1962 spec.
I think this is just an overpriced EOBD or OBD2 P code scanner.
It states it is OBD2 and not EOBD2.
EOBD2 is Enhanced On Board Diagnostics and is vehicle specific.

Beginning to sound like the Bongo Owner Suckering Machine is at work again on ebay and any old £15 device might actually do the job

That's the same as my code reader. I've not had cause to use it on our 2001 van yet, but it's handy to know it'll probably do the business. It has worked well on lots of other cars and more than earnt it's keep.
I was advised, before I bought my Autel unit, to avoid the many fake devices and buy a genuine unit, even though they are a bit more money.

Does anyone know - if I replace the lambda sensor, will the engine warning light go out automatically, or do I have to use the reader gizmo to clear the error code?

It should go out but best to clear all codes off anyway.

An update on progress:
I found this
http://www.lambdasensor.com/main/mcolours1.htm which suggests that a white/white/grey/black 4 wire Lambda sensor could be an alternative to black/black/white/blue (as in my Bongo).
So I took a punt on one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130595752653? ... EBIDX%3AIT
When I fitted it the engine fan came on straight away so I figured that something was not right and disconnected it again.
I put the original sensor in a glass of coke for 3 days - refitted it and cancelled the error codes using the reader device.
So far the engine warning light has gone out and stayed out - although I have not been far, but I am hopeful of at least a temporary reprieve.

More likely you had a poor connection at the plug. The heater circuit is inside the sensor so would not be affected by the Coke.
Fingers crossed.
