Tried a few things with headlights. Tried contact cleaner , which worked for a couple of minutes then I think contacts must dry out and full been stops working again.
So it looks like it is definitely the contacts on switch but, it looks like all the indicator, headlight switch unit has to be removed in one piece after removing steering wheel first. It is one with an airbag.
Looked around for replacement switch unit on eBay where there is one but condition doesn't look brilliant.
Not sure what to do now!

Might be worth having a word with breakers like Bongo Spares, these are complete steering wheels etc. but I suspect he might have just the stalks as well http://www.bongospares.co.uk/shop/elect ... per-stalk/

Hooray back with full beam now. 2 month without in winter not good. Had to replace indicator, headlight stalk unit as all is within one unit. Sourced replacement from bongospares and all working now. For anyone else who has to do this there is a different stalk assembly for airbag and non airbag models, thanks to bongospares got the right one.
Fixed now so hopefully another good year ahead with this brilliant vehicle. :D :D
