Only notice them running when Air Con is on. I would check that the thermostat is operating correctly. Not easy to do unless you have a good thermometer to check the temp at the top hose when the stat opens.
May actually be worth investing in a new stat anyway & having the coolant system flushed at time of fitting.

Cheers
Thanks that is what I now suspect. Not having anything to compare it too I assumed it was normal and it seems that its not, at least not unless the A/C is on etc.

The stat was only renewed a year ago with a genuine Mazda item but as its overheated I will probably renew anyway as I work round the system.

Never the less it is worth checking that the pulley is in fact secure.

Good Luck.
Good point about the pulley, the diagram on LushProjects makes it look like its got a rubber section in between the two pulley wheels for the Aux belts. I guess there is only one way to find out!

Whats the best way to test the waterpump is working?

Is it a case of pulling of the top hose with the engine cold, rev the engine and depending on how wet I get indicates the pumps operation?

I recall somebody taking this approach with a diesel.
Stat removed to ensure a flow to the top hose when cold?
