the oils that supersede are usually backwards compatible. :)

ive just got a new 65 plate truck thats a euro 6 and its so new no one but the dealer had the correct oil, well they wernt telling peeps what all the new code meant/was, after loads of effort i got the correct oil and it is backwards compatible with the earlier 2 generations of engines with the back end exhaust gadgets etc.
the general lack of help and advice is just a ploy to keep you going to the dealers for service, then they hit you with the famous words --- it may affect your warranty.

Hi,

Thanks for all the advice. I am just going to leave it as is and then do another change at a much shorter interval in a few months. When I say black and old I meant like tar. I have an electric fluid pump that has done many diesel oil changes in the past and it really struggled to extract the oil. I got the full amount out but it took for ever.

Thanks,

Matt
