Not a massive job, it may be possible to remove the existing bolt that is in the hole, in which case its just insert a new one, at worst its drill it out and put in a helicoil and then a new bolt. Allans would be an excellent choice!

I was to change engine oil, Diff oil, ATF oil very soon but I have a 300 round trip journey on Thursday so I will just drain a bit off for now.

Excellent call Geoff on that sheared bolt though I'm surprised symptoms are not engine speed related for that. Drilling out stud and replacing might best be done by a garage with experience and the right tools as it can be tricky if DIY goes wrong. Allans should have no problem with it.

Leaky rocker gasket not uncommon on the diesel. Not serious unless significant oil loss and/or unacceptable smells. It can sometimes be cured/reduced by gently tightening the rocker cover bolts in the area concerned.

ATF fluid sounds OK - I'd leave it pending results from changing sheared manifold bolt.

The thing to watch with the Diff is not to drain it until you are sure you can undo the refill plug in order to refill it - its not unknown for the latter to be a b*gger to undo I'm told.

Personally, I'd bite the bullet and treat the old girl to having Allan's fix and fettle it. I'm not sure there's any garage better than them in the UK when it comes to fixing Bongos, and 90 mins drive in a Bongo to see them I would regard as an enjoyable day out. Hopefully they can do all that's needed if you turn up early and do a bit of sightseeing while they work on it.

Brace yourself a little in case fixing that bolt doesn't remove the whine. With luck Allans will identify the cause of the noise anyway (though gearboxes can be tricky to diagnose even for the best).

Not sure how to check the Diff oil. Can anyone let me know how to do this?

try this for info. if the stud has gone then the manifold will be warped, not a problem if Allans involved but if anyone is considering a diy job then its best to be aware.

hi everyone,

Just thought I would post an update. After taking it down to Allans, it turned out to be a knackered diff. Got a second hand one sent down to him and he swapped it out and now all is good

Great news and thanks for the update. That's you sorted then

i thought so. went to change the engine oil just now.... I can just about manage that... and the first bolt holding the under tray snapped when trying to loosen it.... so bought a oil pump to extract it from the dipstick and the tube that came with it is too wide..... Doh! going to get some thinner tubing. Is nothing easy any more!
