In the end we drive cheap cars, because that's what Mr. Joe Public wants, then complains that it isn't a Rolls Royce...How many times have you heard of someone expecting a £2000.00 Bongo to give trouble-free service for years without touching much?????....and this is a car that cost thousands when new, and lke as not is all but worn out. Poor old thing needs resurrecting to thrive once more

That's really interesting. So are you recommending we put water soluble oil in our cooling systems? I'd hoped that Mazda (and other OEM suppliers) produced water pumps with sealed-for-life bearings, but it sounds like I'm living on Planet IdealWorld again

Doesn't sound like the spring seats (could be wrong)....That would make me think top mounts, or bushes somewhere?...lower arm / damper . Get it jacked up and get to work levering with a crow-bar

Thanks for the reply Helen. I've had it to pieces today. Arm bushes and all ball joints are fine. Didn't get shock out bit top mount looks good without excessive movement. I'm at a lose. Again!

MMmmm....I've listened again, and IF....IF... it's not suspension, as you seem to have checked everywhere, have you looked in the engine compartment or under the bonnet?....It could be a loose mount somewhere, and when braking, the weight of the component shifts and makes a different noise?...I'd look at the larger components and the security of the mounting bolts?.... e.g. Steering?
Sorry to be vague, but I'm sure I've heard a similar noise....can't remember what it was!

how do you listen to it helen, when i click on the link i get the photobucket page etc but its just a blank screen, i can click next or previous and the pics are there.!!!!.

Listening to the recording it sound more like a Drive Related noise rather than suspension. Ie wheel bearing/CV/diff/etc etc.
PS along shot but it could be the mud flaps needing repositioned, check they are clear on full lock..

Thanks for the reply, only just seen it. I completely agree it sounds drive related, induced by braking and turning right. I've checked the bearings and diff and they all seem ok. The CV's I'm less confident on, however can't hear anything through the diff when listening by stethoscope (would it show up?).
Mudflaps would have been a possibility if I had any and I've checked the wheel arch liner etc.
An update to this, is as mentioned above I've inserted what Mazda call the bump stop (the thick rubber washer at the back of the front wishbone mount) and have heard nothing since. I don't know if that is it cured however as it is intermittent, I dared celebrate!
