That 'J' shaped tube is the gearbox breather. They commonly come adrift, so are hooked over the dipstick tube. Not an issue, but a tywrap to hold it in place and prevent it hanging down would be a good idea.
The electrical connector certainly could be rear speakers, but I can't say I have seen one like that on my van (I can't say I've looked at the rear speaker wiring route either!)

Connector looks to be after-market & if you follow the wires, the mystery will be solved

Does it have gears 1-2-3 & are they shifting late? If it does & they are it could be the TPS is way out of adjustment after the head issue. It is this & the output speed sensor that determines shift points. No codes only mean there are no ELECTRICAL issues. Dirty connections can be a cause but I would expect to see the HOLD light flashing as it would cause an electrical circuit fault.
If it were here - & it aint never going to be clearly, I would put a set of test lights on the external solenoid wiring to see it the ECU is commanding 4th (only after checking the TPS), if the lights indicate it is then you have an internal issue - possibly solenoids hydraulically failed - if the lights don't confirm 4th gear commanded then your issue is external.
I hope you don’t mind me resurrecting this post - but I’ve just bought my first Bongo ‘99 Auto Diesel) and it has an issue where it won’t select 3rd or 4th gear. It also sometimes kicks down into first unexpectedly, completely losing drive momentarily.
Do you have any specific advice other than the above for me?
Or indeed has any other fixes been discovered since these posts in 2014?
Thanks for your time, reading my first post on Bongo Fury!

I have gearbox issues where it wont change into 3rd or 4th.Simon Jones wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2014 7:13 pm I don't recall if this was 2 or 4 WD but this is what the gearbox speed sensor looks like. The propshaft bolts onto the flange on the left of the photo:
My rev counter seems to be working correctly though, so can I rule a faulty speed sensor out?

Well yes if its showing the right speed then that's OK.
Re: Bongo auto gear box issue - Not changing into top gear
Thanks for confirming.

I have a used TPS on the way, as well as a valve body and new solenoid set…
