Bongo Fury

I'd certainly be happier if I could see the rod move, but I've never seen it move, it looks like it's never moved despite my occasional drops of oil. It is not at all shiny where I would expect it to go in and out!

It could be there's no vacuum (no pipes hanging loose) or the turbo end of the linkage is corroded up through never having been given work or else it's never needed to work because I never thrash it.

There's also a distinct possibility that I don't really understand the operation of it, or the turbo for that matter. I've spent years driving vehicles without them. Nothing about driving the Bongo has ever made me jump up startled and say to myself "Wow, that's the turbo kicking in". In fact, sometimes when I've read posts suggesting that it is noticeable, I've usually wondered if they are mixing it up with the kick down (something else normally outside my driving style).

frank, mines a manual and comes in at 1900 revs, the mrs has an auto and that comes in at around 2100 from mem .

you should be able grab the rod with pliers and move it fairly easily,

I will give that a try (the pliers). Toyed with the idea but didn't want to damage vacuum unit. The Bongo is parked elsewhere at the moment so I haven't been able to look at what I'm presently typing about. If appropriate I might demount vacuum unit from wherever it is attached and try waggling the whole thing. Hopefully that will give me a clue if it is sticking at the vacuum unit or the wastegate end.

All I know is that I have never been convinced that it has moved during my ownership so waiting until a convenient time to give it a thorough check won't make much difference. Even if there is a related fault, I don't thing that I have got the same end result as BeArDy because I have never considered mine to lack power except very occasionally when stone cold and using too much cooking oil for the time of year.

Sounds very similar to our problem at the moment. (see topic. 'air flow sensor 2l petrol'). Have you had the output from the ECU checked along with the wiring to your various sensors ? (TPS, MAF sensor etc) May be worth a look?

The old diesel engines are a very mechanical affair with nothing as fancy as a MAF sensor. The later drive by wire injector pumps are slighter higher tech.

I would rather have the non fancy mechanical affair at the moment. I have half a mind to buy a scrapper just to have a supply of bits to swap out and try when something fails. Not sure Hyasynth Bucket next door would approve.

I bought a spare engine for just that purpose, but only ever used one part in my own van. Other bits of it are now in at least 6 other vehicles, so it has definitely come in useful. I'm not allowed to buy another one . Hope you get it sorted soon.

My wife and I have no secrets apart from whats in the garages LOL
