Bongo Fury

Leaving aside the issue of the type and wiring of the plugs, the OBD-1, 1.5 & 2 standards can use 1 of 5 possible protocols see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD2#OBD-I ... _protocols
None of these are the simple pulse count option used by the Bongo on any of the versions.
You will need a separate module to convert the serial pulses into a form that one of the machines can read.

I think that is what the ELM unit is supposed to do Geoff, could be wrong though.

That's not necessarily the only method of obtaining diagnostics. The RX7s of the same era use the same pins to also access a 'proper' live data stream using a proprietary hardware and software protocol. The link posted above indicates that some Mazdas use ISO9141 or SAE J1850 to communicate, presumably using a proprietary data format.
Wiki isn't a very useful guide for a JDM. OBD1 was a piece of US legislation that mandated basic diagnostics but not any protocols, OBD2 (again US law only) specified a subset of a number of standards. OBD1.5 doesn't actually exist but is commonly used to refer to the cancelled OBD2 laws that were updated and then introduced in 1996.
It would be very unusual for there to be no serial link on a petrol engined Japanese car of this era but sadly its quite common on their diesels; I don't know what Mike drives.

Well thanks for the info on the reader !!

I've checked ours and it does have the adapter but not the OBD shape.

Our Bongo is a 2001 V6 so it looks like that those interface cables 17 to 16 are no good and the ELM cable is the way to go !

Any ideas where you can get these cables from?

Well yours looks a lot more promising, you'd have to try it with ISO9141-2 using the Forscan software or even just hook up an ELM tool and use hyperterminal to see if you can get any response.

I'll have a fiddle around with it when I get a chance. At the moment, everything is working fine (touch wood)
