There is no service indicator on any Bongo variant so if any lights come on while driving, stop and investigate straight away.

Even a neglected V6 is a cleaner running engine and less likely to get 'sludged up' than a diesel..

Maybe the original poster has an oil leak .. that as lead to his problem ..??

I did think that a leak might have caused the issue, as it went from running absolutely fine ( around town and motorway ) to oil light on / rattly noise fairly quickly, however having filled up with oil, it doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere, and i couldn't see any visable signs of a leak.

Whether it would start to leak with the engine running I don't know.

As we were thinking of selling, possibly spending £1000s on getting it fixed isn't really an option. We've now got it back on the drive, so will weigh up our options, but at the moment selling as is ( spares or repair ) might be the best route.

As the oil is pumped around the engine under pressure, a leak will be more noticeable when the engine is running ..

I have a concrete drive and there is a slight oil stain .. I had a problem with my alternator last summer .. when removing the 'splash guard' from under the engine, it was soaked in oil .. the alternator was also covered with oil ..

On mine the cam seals are leaking ...

I feel it is a typical poor dealer attitude to customers in saying the cam belt is renewed on delivery .. but not changing the Cam / crank seals at the same time with very little extra for component / labour cost to them while doing the belt ..

They say a bust belt will knacker an engine .. so may an oil loss from a known to be vulnerable part .. !!

Mine was imported in June 2009 with an 'indicated' very low mileage .. but, no seal will last for ever .. especially as my Bongo was made in 1998

I stand corrected - hopefully mine will not find itself "low"with regular level checks but if the oil light came on I would assume the worst - better to be safe than sorry. :)

Wasn't there an almost identical case to this with a V6, I think in Cumbria, can't remember the outcome of that one but it too appeared to have no oil in it.

EDIT - This one http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... =3&t=56735

Hi,a faulty oil switch can also cause the warning light to come on.

On Thursday the oil light started to flicker, then came on permanently ( journey home from work - about 25 miles ). Started it up the next morning and it was making a rattly noise. Got 1 minute round the corner, louder rattly noise, and the engine died................
cheers, Darren
But a dodgy oil pressure switch would not make the engine rattle ..

I'm not familiar with the V6 but is it possible to get a cam cover off and see if a cam is going round? If not then it's odds on that the cam belt has snapped.
Is the oil pump driven by the cam belt on a V6??
Not good that you have had to put that much oil in though.
One other possibility is that the distributor has come loose (again I don't know if this can happen on this engine) and the ignition timing is out. This would certainly stop it starting. This happened to me years ago on a Mini, loud rattling and engine stopped. Twiddling the distributor around got it going again.
