Not according to my fridge manufacturer, maybe a compressor fridge would need less, it depends what you want to run. This is what I did, not how anyone else has to do it. I sized my cables for the length of run according to manufacturers' information. If it was the front socket smaller cables would be adequate. People have to do their own calcs for their own needs. The cost of the heavier cable wass virtually negligible, it just makes the routing a bit more challenging.

I would guess that your fridge manufacturer would probably recommend wiring it directly rather than via a plug / socket?

No, it is supplied with a plug. I have used a John Dere type plug. The OP was talking about a microwave which is why I didn't suggest lighter cable. Mine is an absorption fridge and they do draw a lot of current.
