It's a pump thermos flask. i fill it before leaving home and it will stay hot enough to make a drink for a good long while. If I'm on a site with running hot water i just fill it from the tap occasionally or just boil the kettle once in a while. its not quite running hot water but simple and convenient.

And it gives a clue to the solution used in narrowboats. Engine used as generator, waste heat extracted using calorifier, hot water stored in well insulated tank, back-up water heating available for small quantities when engine not in use. I still think an eberspacher water heater c/w calorifier would make a good set-up in a Bongo, though doubt the capital outlay could be justified without it being liveaboard ha ha. So it looks like Helens kettle and corblimeys thermos flask are the simple solution.

Hi
Mike....
We tend to pick up broken twigs and debris, once breakfast's done, and keep the barbi in with a kettle on....free and it tidies up....so we've never given a thought to using the engine, but I bet it's possible to make a strap to slide over the top of the engine to support a couple of small cylindrical tanks in a cradle either side of the rocker-box (cam-housing)....I reckon heat soak after a run to the campsite will give half a gallon of piping hot water.
We also use a solar shower bag, and even in the UK that gives washing water in the evening....
Cheers
Helen

In a similar vein to the "Kelly Kettle", I'm toying with the idea of a veg-oil candle venting up a copper water pipe 'flue', somehow surrounded by a water jacket, and on into a flexible stainless exhaust. May also try a copper coil over the barbie and pass water through that. :D

But remember what this thread was created to discuss. I too use a kettle as the cheap practical option, but it is nonetheless interesting to discuss how engine waste heat can be made best use of. Save the planet by reducing waste etc plus have hot water on tap etc. Now, what is the cost of carting all that weight about?
