Bongo now sorted, with huge thanks due again to TurboDave for advising me of George Poole motors in New Mills, and to them for seeing me and doing the job at zero notice. This is a great little garage (not actually that little) who really seem to know their stuff. They are familiar with Bongos, looking after Dave's and one other regularly, and they have the big advantage of being an MOT testing station. Their charge for changing the alternator was very reasonable, and they have a guy who can refurbish alternators. So I've left the old one with them and they going to give it to him for a quote. I'll do an update on this in due course because it could be a very useful service for Bongo owners. Garage details are:

George Poole & Co, Unit 7 Watford Bridge Industrial Estate, New Mills, High Peak, Derbyshire, SK22 4HJ Tel: 01663 742168 and if they are not already on the approved BF list, then I can heartily recommend them for putting on it.

The job itself was a nailbiter, as the replacement alternator gave out no charge when first run up. So I was resigned to continue my journey chargeless (but with MarcT77s advice giving reassurance - thanks for that Marc). But when he started the car up again ready for me to leave, the alternator was working, and had stayed that way since. I guess the exciter needed exciting after 4 years resting in my garage.

So thanks again everyone. I'm now holed up safely at my destination, typing this. :-)
