Whoever you use for your conversion go for a top loading fridge. The fridge door tends to get in the way of everything and the fridge cannot be accessed when the rock n' roll bed is in place. If you fancy a night cap of the alcholic variety then a top loading fridge is perfect.

The best thing about a top loading fridge is that the cold air doesn't all come tumbling out when the fridge door is opened - and need replenishing.

I'm pretty sure the mushroom roof's and JAL's other roofs are JAL's own and not available anywhere else. Having dealt with Phil a couple of times, I'd advise strongly that you shouldn't expect him to work with bongo's bought elsewhere.

The mushroom roof is heavy and getting the bed boards in and out can be a hassle compared with the ease of the AFT - when my wife's off camping without me, she has to get someone else to lower and close the roof. However you have way more space and it's also more flexible - you can choose to have a partial roof ledge up which is handy for storage and also to sleep a small child in a travel tent whilst not having the roof fully closed. The AFT is less flexible as when it's up it's up and the only way out during the night is underneath the mats, which means waking up anyone else sharing the space. The mushroom roof is less rigid than the AFT but having done loads of camping in it in high winds, it works well enough.

Think carefully about the conversion - we got a JAL stock conversion and later had it reconverted at some cost in order to get a setup that was up to the standard we wanted - I don't think I need to say more. However the van has been clocked up a lot of miles without fault and flown through it's services with compliments from the garage so I doubt JAL would let you down with the base vehicle.

Thanks Dansara for the info and PM, pretty much confirms what I already thought.

Phil told me that it's 'very unlikely' to carry out work on Bongos other than his stock. I will most likely be on the lookout for someone selling their JAL with mushroom roof, then have conversion somewhere else.

Thanks for info though :)
