chiefster1976 wrote:Interesting read M8ongo on page 3, however with your problem, quote;;
''She starts fine and idles fine its only when the cold start kicks in and the revs try to rise that she starts missing and chuffin out unburnt fuel but if i raise the revs to 1300 on the throttle for a couple of seconds she's as good as gold.'' end quote.
My problem however is the opposite to your problem..(same same but different)
Mine coughs and splutters from the FIRST intial start up from the first start of the engine..Its only until i rev the engine she will clear and THEN the cold choke will kick in normally as it always did from cold and runs A o.k from that point....
Im not a auto electrician but willling to learn.lol..
If my bongo was starting from cold and idling fine before(and nothing has been taken off or replaced) it tells me something electical, sensor, glow plugs or some sort of other machanical issue has arisen, hence i shouldnt need to adjust my cold start selonoid adjustment screw should i??
maybe the selonoid has just given up..lol..
i would love to try the easiest first and adjust the cild start idle before cahnging glow plugs but has nothing has been removed or replaced i feel this wouldnt work.. Correct me if im wrong here, like i said im no auto leccy..

Have a look at the tubing to the solenoids.. See if anything has broke off of displaced..? Not always easy to spot.

You could also try swapping the white & the black connectors over on the solenoids?? If it changes the symptom, could be one of these gone!?
If the idle screw hasn't been touched? Leave it alone... For now.

Thanks Jaylee... I will check if the tubes are split etc... So changing over the white and black connectors.
What will this show?? what does Each one do? if you just plug one in at a time will this diagnose a broken selonoid?
Just replaced my raocker gasket and replaced the glow plugs. New test tomorrow morning..

The white plug on the vacuum solenoid on the right not only holds the throttle solenoid in as part of the cold start sequence.
It keeps the revs up while idling when the AC is on too!
Soooooo, (i hope i got this right?)

If the engine is already up to temperature at the time while it idles swap the white plug on each solenoid in turn & switch on the AC & see if it actives the throttle solenoid thing..?
Or?? if the engine is cold swap the black connector over in turn on the two vacuum solenoids, switch on the pre ignition (glow light.) & check the throttle solenoid thing moves in anticipation of a cold start??
These things don't really click like you get on a relay. The only way i know is to see the effect they cause on the "throttle solenoid" thing when in good working order..?!!

remove both plugs to the solenoids, then put 12volts and an earth to each one in turn, they do click very noticeably, you may have to reverse the polarity of the 12 volts to be sure.

Come on Ady, they don't click much...!

A 30amp relay pretty much does the conga by comparison...!

I had same issue as described and have cured it.
Removed glow plugs and one by one connected them to the live glow plug feed and earth them holding them with pliers against inlet manifold. One glow plug (the only newish one in the set a cheapo one) didn't glow so I replaced it, job done. New ones do fail.

I too had the same symptoms only a few weeks after fitting new plugs. Tested them with a multimete and one had failed (open circuit). After replacing with NGK, all was fine.
Keep it simple for now.

Chiefster's Bongo may not have the shorter glow plugs but have the longer ones like those in my 1998 Bongo. NGK do not make the longer grow plugs which is a pain.

So that solution may not work unless someones know a really good longer plug. I think that there is one but I forget the name.

I have fitted both longer and shorter ones to my bongo though not both at the same time. For shorter ones I spaced the connecting live feed up a bit on the glow plugs using spare nuts/washers and made sure with a little manipulation that the positive feed didn't touch the head

I think you guys are definatly right..Keeping it simple...
i changed the glow plugs for the new NGK plugs...Mine were the 100mm ones...so fitted the 81mm or whatever they are in..
Just needed to take off the glow plug rail and make a WAVE type shape to avoid the injector tubes, no spacers needed..
Started her up in the cold this morning and A o.k!! Job done!! I changed the rocker gasket and the exhaust manifold gasket
which may or may not have been creating a vacumn

not sure. but all good...
i may still tinker with the cold start adjust screw as thats easy as just to get those revs up a touch on cold start up..

Glad you got her sorted, it's a great feeling when you turn the key and she burbles into life without a james bond style smoke screen, just noticed that you also have a bestnest ever Green Bongo, they're just soooooo cool
