I've never done a Mazda .. but quite a few other cars from escorts to Jags and I have never had any hassle changing big ends .. pistons .. cams etc: while the engine was in situ ..

Many years ago there was a local machine shop who had a mobile re boring service .. they re bored / hones the block while in the chassis ..

They also supplied 'Cords' and 'Well worthy rings' ... 'flexible' rings that took up bore wear .. they would also 'micro knurl' the bottom skirt of the piston the minute 'criss / cross' pattern making it larger to take up piston slap ...

All gone in this throw away / replace age ....

Ah days gone by....

Hepolite also made "Pep Pistons" that made life easier.
