The holes on the roof with AFT are three pairs of threaded inserts, so ideal for fixing brackets to:

I've just refurbed these brackets since the photos were taken so they're back to bare polished stainless steel.

I'm using an F35 Pro in Titanium which is a good match for the current van:

I thought that was the case....tip for you (if you haven't tried it) spray your newly polished S/S brackets with Maplins sourced Plastic PCB sealer..did my outside S/S lights, lasted over three years before the sea (salty) wind finally broke the seal down then just did them again. 8)

Thanks for the tip. Hadn't considered lacquer, so just used several coats of wax polish.

I used the original VW gutter mount brackets, bit of bending to get the awning in the correct position.

Then put a stainless bolt through the pillars to restrain the bracket. This stops the bracket flopping about on the gutter which I think is the main problem. Constant vibration and bending the gutter will break the seal and possibly eventually fatigue the welds.
Awning now held firmly in place. Bit of bugger getting the locking nuts onto the bolts inside though. Have to remove the trim and very fiddly.

Simon - love the look of your van.

Particularly like the alloys , the awning [ i have a f35 pro but the 1.8 m one , wish i'd gone for the bigger one now i've seen yours! ].

Best of all is the aerial shot - is that a standard AFT or have you added it ? It looks contoured at rear and the front wind deflector i have never seen before.

All in all it looks very streamlined and sleek. =D>

Thanks for the comments :). My first van came with an F35 Pro and the brackets seen in the photo which I believe we're fitted in Japan. I prefer them to the more common brackets as they're very secure and do not need to rest on the bodywork. The awning needed repair, so I removed the whole lot a while back. I then had an opportunity to get a brand new awning on eBay which would look a bit smarter on the new Bongo. I believe it is 2.5m long which is about as long as you can go without it overhanging.

The roof is the original Mazda one fitted to the final Aero version of the Bongo. There is a second skylight built into the dark front section which gives a bit of extra light when the roof is up.

The photos were taken at Dungeness lighthouse where we were last weekend on a day trip out from Southern Softies.

that roof top pic looks like a tomica model mate, are you sure you have that bongo ?? .

i made brackets similar to simons design, no body damage ,you can just throw away the d brackets though. the roof seal is not affected by this method either.

I have got a F35 Fiammia awning on my van and would love to put this on our new, two week old Bongo. Any chance of being able to buy an example of this bracket or getting the plans/info to make one?

Thanks

Tim

The only person I know that can get something similar made is Bob AKA Rooster http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... ile&u=1639

He's no longer got a Bongo, but hopefully checks into the forum now and again.

I've just picked up a nearly new F35 Pro last weekend (like in my photos but with the VW brackets), so will get it advertised on here presently (if it ever stops raining) :(
