Many many thanks for all your comments, and having owned a 97 Mazda 323 for 13 years I know just how reliable those era mazdas are and do hope that my Bongo (4x4 diesel facelift unconverted btw) is equally as cheep to keep, and I may just have to get used to the running cost and just enjoy. I have already started to cycle to work in order to stay out of the start stop traffic, so that can only be a good thing, can't it!

Thanks again for the comments and hope y'all have a great 2012. :)

First off, well done on cycling to work. It's by far the most economical, fun and healthy way to commute if you can do it. I do the same rather than use my Bongo.

Although the fuel costs can be quite high, I calculated that the difference if fuel price between a car averaging around 50mpg compared to the Bongo doing around 28mpg driving around 6000 miles per year (it's our second vehicle) is around £160. Considering that the maintenance costs are lower than many modern cars, especially if you're prepared to tinker with a little help from this forum, it's not that bad on true running costs.

HI Dom,I would have thought the difference in fuel cost would be nearer £600 ?

Cheers.

In perspective the difference between running a small car that averages 50 mpg and ours even if you drop the average to 25 mpg it's an extra £14.69 per week at £1.40 ltr.
That's the top line, as our's is an old fashioned motor that is simple to service and repair the difference reduces before you consider depreciation costs against a new or nearly new smaller car and lets face it virtually every car is smaller than the Bongo.
So lets be generous and say it costs £10.00 a week extra to run ours, what do we get for the money.
Well, 8 full sized seats, fold them down and you have a good sized van, fold them back and you have a space to.............. .......... [-X Sleep............. That's before you consider the view you get driving.
Lets be honest what everyday transport comes close to what we have.
Does it look expensive now or is the tenner extra to cheap for what we have?...........

All figures rounded for convenience.

6000miles@50mpg=120gallonsx4.54=762litresx£1.40=£1069.00

6000miles@28mpg=214gallonsx4.54=972litresx£1.40=£1362.00

£1362-£1069=£295

£295/52=£5.68 per week.

6000miles@50mpg=120gallonsx4.54=762litresx£1.40=£1069.00 should read 544litresx£1.40=£762

6000miles@28mpg=214gallonsx4.54=972litresx£1.40=£1362.00

£1362-£1069=£295

£295/52=£5.68 per week.

Sorry, stupid MS calculator in Windows jumped a step in calc 1

I thought the difference was a bit small but didn't notice the reason

So yes £500 pa and less than £10/week.

....and of course I subtract the gbp200 I save on servicing and guesstimate what other savings I make through the Bongo being simple, reliable, and able to transport cheap white goods etc. wins on eBay etc. And of course, as TGP implies, what price can you put on pleasure of driving and ownership.
