Well if the MOT test is to treat HID lamps as per Build and Conformity regs as ESVA and IVA tests did and do, then HID lamps will fail unless they self level and have washers, some MOT stations may not be that hot on them and let them through if they have self levellers on thinking it looks factory fit and so must be ok, what they are really looking to trap is your typical chaved up corsa/civic slammed wide wheels pimptastic with HID lamps pointing into the opposite carriageway or straight in your eyes.

For SVA and IVA the HID self levellers had to be disabled and HID system removed or disabled and the headlamp converted to take a H4 bulb and make it have a beam pattern.. isnt as easy as it sounds.

Post SVA IVA test most used to be put back to how they were before.

If that is the case, then a lot of well known importers and dealers must be going to a lot of effort to swap to conventional headlamps and then re-fit the original HID lamps prior to sale

just a bit of info re the new MOT regs on HID lights
I have just had my MOT done this week I have the HID lights on my aero V6 but no washers fitted and it sailed through with no future reccomendations on the form. This now comes attached to the MOT sheet which is printed off at the garage This has done away with the old MOT certificate and in fact the MOT is now computer registered and can be checked vis your index number by the authorities.

Good to hear you've had no probs for the MOT. That bodes well for the rest of us Aero owners

My Aero has HID lights and has just got through it's MOT without comment

I think you could have stopped that sentence after "Obviously not Halfords". Anyone that lets anyone from Halfrauds anywhere near their Bongo (or any other car) needs their head read. Motor factors are cheaper and they know what they are talking about. Why would anyone go to Halfrauds?

Ever tried finding a motor factor open at 7pm or on a Sunday? Halfords is to motoring what Homebase is to building: its convenient, but you wouldn't buy everything from them. They're good for getting most things needed for a DIY project, but if you've got the option of shopping around you can save some money. I've recently bought 2 tyres from Halfords and it was by far the cheapest of all the local tyre depots. Ordered and paid for online at 7pm, drop the wheel off at 8am the following day and pick it up at midday. If you don't like Halfords, you don't have to shop there

Halfords have pulled me out of a hole a few times,I know a few first class mechanics etc that work and have worked for Halfords,dont see a lot wrong with them.
