Looking at the lush diagram
here shows the pump is gear driven, and the cam is belt-driven from the pump.

If you are repeating Ian Taylor verbatim then he is wrong. As others have said, if the belt fails then you'll cause expensive damage to the engine. However, I personally believe that the Bongo belt is under less strain than a "conventional" crank to camshaft setup due to less torque applied to the belt but it can still fail due to perishing over time. My advice, for what it's worth, would be 100,000 km or 5 years - whichever comes first.
