Hi,

I experienced something similar a few years back with my V6. Feared the worst but all it was in the end was a dodgy throttle position sensor. Replacing this cured the issue. From memory it was quite dear, genuine one was around the £140 mark. It's a good idea to change the ATF regularly. Mine never had a gasket on the sump (could have been removed before I had it mind). The bongo specialist I use always uses a liquid gasket after cleaning everything up.

Darryl wrote:My V6 has started to over rev when changing from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. This only happens when the engine is warm, when it is cold the over revving is not such an issue.

The auto box tries to change up at the right revs, 2500 ish but then spikes to 3500 before seeming to catch the next gear and away we go.

Any suggestions, i've just been quoted 1.5 hrs labour at £65/hour plus oil and vat so nearly £200 to drain, clean and replace ATF. Does this sound like a good place to start.

Thanks
Hi Darryl,

My Bongo (2.5ltr Diesel) is currently having a similar problem, :( pls see thread Rising revs & lack of power ??? What's up with my dear Bongo (on page 4 at the moment) which may help you.
Booked into ADS (http://www.bongospecialists.co.uk) (In Bristol) tomorrow & will update the tread when I have further info.....of course YOUR Bongo may have a completely different problem.. #-o

1.5 hrs labour at £65/hour plus oil and vat so nearly £200 to drain, clean and replace ATF LOL
I'm no mechanic but found this job pretty basic & requires minimal tools/time., just follow the members factsheet & missfixit's thread on ATF change..simple stuff.......why not DIY ....................................................or drive to my house & I'll do it for half price

Update. Got the oil replaced and filter cleaned. Apparently very clean so probably done recently, wasted £100

Guy puts the fault within the gearbox as it is slow to take up drive, he offered to put a second hand box on for £800 but with no guarantee. He does not work on auto boxes due to the complexity and lack of bits for bongo. Am taking it Bristol transmission tomorrow but it is looking like a full gearbox overhaul with new clutches etc. £1550 quoted but am hoping the warranty I have may cover this as i've only had it three months! More updates to follow. Fuel filter has been changed.

I'm assuming the V6 must have a Throttle Position Sensor? Has this been checked?

I did ask him if it could be the tps but he was confident that was not the issue. Is there an easy way to check myself without a new replacement to hand?

Don't you just love the fact that ' He does not work on auto boxes due to the complexity' but pretends to understand how the tps interact through the ecu with it.

Just because the auto box isn't doing what it should be doing it doesn't mean the problem is in the box.
The tps sends a signal to the ecu, the ecu then looks at water and air temp, engine speed ect, then opens the fuel injectors for the required milliseconds.

The ecu program will respond to preprogrammed parameters that it assumes are correct. For example 12V and fuel at a given flow/pressure and tps position these and more will fool the box. So don't believe the fool that doesn't understand the box and the system, I certainly don't have a clue what happens in the box but hopefully understand a little of what it relies on for input.

just to chuck some more into the pot----.
any inline type filters, and alternator output. both of these ive found can lead you a dance when looking at the box.
according to the manual, checking the tps values is quite straight forward and easy to illiminate.
dont rush to rip the box out.

Another update.

Been to autobox specialist who thinks the problem is lack of oil pressure within the box. He thinks it is either dirty filters or o-ring failures. I'm no expert but he will advise tomorrow of outcome. He tested the tps and was ok.

Fingers crossed.

Picked up bongo from auto gearbox specialist. Unfortunately he did not think the sump had been removed as the filter was dirty and there was sludge at the bottom of the pan! Both he and I have discussed this with the garage it went to on Wednesday but I think I'll put it down to experience with the garage on sloper road as it runs fine after the second ATF change. The box now has 80% pressure, which is apparently normal given 90000 miles and 10 years old.

Maybe I was just unlucky with the first garage and caught them on an off day!

I think I'd be asking for my £100 back - off day or not - they didn't do as they said they did :?

Personally I'd be looking at informing trading standards - blatant lie by the sounds of it.

I like the baseball bat option but my job prevents me from taking that route. :?

Regarding trading standards, I have the feeling i would be stuck in a situation of the first garage saying they did the work and me having to prove they didn't and i dont think the second garage want the hassle. I'm just dissappointed in the first garage and thought people should be aware.

Lifes to short to fight over £100 but dont like getting ripped off.

Thanks all for advice though and glad to have it back on the road.
