We have arrived at the chunnel early and have usually been put on the first train. Got there ten minutes late once and had to wait three hours but that was on the first Friday night of the summer school holidays. If you fear the Dartford Crossing potential for delays go round the M25 the other way. Distance in milage from Chesterfiield (if via the M42 and M40) is less than 20 miles and there is no toll to pay - Pays to be listening to the Radio for the traffic news.

Found the Chunnel people to be very keen on getting you through ASAP!

We use vouchers and have paid as a car and also been stung having to pay as a camper.

As for parking for the night near Calais, I wouldn't - many of the aires or camping spots are known to attract thieves looking for your cameras etc. or you passports. I would not want to stay within 2 hours drive of the ports, following stories and warnings heard from a continental lorry driver friend.
