I really had no clue about the price of oils. I hope what I have bought is the best oil in the world then. What is the rating of the Costco oil - is it 10W30? I know it probably doesnt have to be but I am curious.
keefysher wrote:You might need 6ltr of ATF fluid depending on the gearbox. This has been found years ago when different vans were done prior to the Poland trip. If you change the ATF and the box goes into safe mode you'll need more fluid than the 4ltr the book says.
It is well worth dropping the sump off the box to clean the filter. The filter type and number/type of bolts will determine the type of box fitted.
Is there any way I can tell how much I will need for my particular gearbox?

When I changed my gearbox oil using a pump to drain it I got roughly 6 litres out, it's a newer shape bongo with the later type of gearbox.

Mine (1996 V6 2.5 Petrol) says the transmission is a 4EC-AT according to a sticker on the passenger door jam. I guess it will be safer for me to buy some more which is a bit of a pain as I have just paid for one lot of shipping.

Thats a great thread and thanks for the link to it. I think i have read that before as i do make good use of the search facility to see if i can find answers before raising a new topic but it may have been a couple of weeks ago.
Ideally i would like to make a series of bookmarks of useful posts for future reference but I have never come across a website like Bongo Fury where the URL is fixed as
http://www.bongofury.co.uk no matter what page I am on. This makes it extremely difficult to reference anything on the site which is a real shame.
Thanks for the info,
Ian

I can't see the logic in buying the cheapest oils for the engine & trans, especially trans as you only change the oil once in a while. Buy a good quality oil if you want to maximise trans life. It all helps. Millermatic ATF DM is a good oil, I wouldn't touch Costco oil unless it was a good named quality brand. Why would you? You have no idea what you are getting.
Oil is a lot cheaper than an engine or trans rebuild.

I had this issue a while ago but I can't remember what the answer was, it's something to do with how you log into the forum. Mine is fine now & can be bookmarked.

I had suffered with this for months but thanks I am sorted now thanks to the link to the discussion thread you provided. Previously I had previously been using the link from the hopepage to the forums which is why I had problems.
Cheers,
Ian

What a charmer!
I was only trying to point out that cheap oils don't pay in the long run. I did, if you had read my post correctly, state 'unless it was a good named quality brand' but you chose to ignore that. Never mind, I will pipe down now & leave you to it. What do I know eh?

Go to the main fury page and right click on the forum link instead of the usual left click.
Depending on your web browser, you will have an option to 'Open link in new tab' or 'open link in new window' or words to that effect.
Chosing either of these options will open the forum with the real URL in the address bar - and it will change as you navigate around, so can be bookmarked etc.

I agree - as a general principle, putting stuff whose pedigree you might have any reason to doubt into a piece of expensive machinery, could prove to be a false economy. What is a few quid anyway when its a fluid (is it actually oil?) change thats only done every zillion miles. OK, so for the informed, it turns out Costco appear to be OK (though surely as price driven generalists they must be tempted to buy on price not on brand consistency?), but we are talking about general principles here.
Things do change on this forum. 2 years ago we didn't have a professional autobox mechanic on here (Dandy was attempting to hold down all quarters). We do now (some say he can't tell the difference between a Christmas turkey and the trundle pinion of a Bongo cross-torque unit, and that he splashes Miller DM under his armpits as deodorant - all we know, is he's called Alacrity) , but I hope we don't upset him
