The strength is mostly in the inner section of the post I would guess. Half tempted to dig it out but too scared of what I might find.

Not sure what you mean by filler, but polyester body filler as not used in the manufacture of vehicles. Most likely a run of braze weld between pillar and roof, lead at a push dependant on age of vehicle.
That's worrying then, maybe it is an old rust repair.

may be best to wait til after the hols though, just in case

Yup. I decided not to chicken out over grinding off the paint and rust on wheel arches to see what was underneath. Best in the long run. One benefit of a rust-through hole (says he putting a +ve spin on it) is that you can use it to squirt anti-rust into the interior.
I have a few isolated spots on the metal below the AFT and above the windscreen. V. slow developing (may be stone chip results) So far I''ve just scratched off surface rust, Kurusted, zinc primer (can sprayed into lid then applied with touch up brush), metallic, then single part lacquer (can lid/brush again).
I can't get out of my head the feeling (right or wrong) that the ageing lacquer is getting more brittle and porous to moisture, and that the car would benefit from a complete recoating with lacquer.

You are right, I should get on with it. It can only get worse.

Did you have it cut out and new metal welded in? The only way i'm afraid

. Grinding out/treating with rusteater is a short term fix. Ive seen untreated stonechips turn into holes in a short space of time

Thanks.

I'm not sure what they did, but will make sure they do what you've suggested this time.

Worst fears realised.

I took the Stanley Knife to the biggest bump and cut the top off. It was hollow, white . Scraped it flat and had a poke to reveal a 5mm hole. I am guessing I have a small sieve under there about the size of a matchbox side.
So I have done a 20' repair for now with some shiny black waterproof tape and will attack it when I get back from holiday. I think the screen will have to comeout. I may leave it until such time as it needs to be replaced on insurance and do another temporary repair with Tetty after my hols. Nearside D Post is the same but nowhere near as bad.

Mine might have been a stonechip that was left to fester. There is a joint there. There is a bit of rust breaking out in the seam of the door shut slightly lower down. I guess water was getting in the front and seeping out of the seam. Or it might have been condensation. The metalwork around bonded windscreens seem to be prone to this sort of thing, I had the same on my old Maestro.
