Thanks to all who replied!
Geoff's suggestion about the handbrake switch was correct: the wire had become detached. Once I reconnected it the roof went up as normal! Hooray!

Now to see to those holes...

Great news esp. that it turned out to be simple. Handy things these Geoffs, not made any more unfortunately :lol: :lol: :( 8)

In case it happens again, a clue is that the brake light on the instrument panel should illuminate when the handbrake is on.

Because the Bongo has an automatic transmission, I confess to not engaging the parking brake every time I park the van, but only on hills.
