Have you checked the fault codes yet as per the fact sheet to see if anything comes up?
Intermittent fault sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere to me, but it only takes 5 minutes to check the fault codes to rule that out if nowt else.

Just checked fault codes:-

11- Air Intake Temperature
64- Pressure Control Solenoid

Any idea what they are and what they do?
Is it just a case of changing these parts?

Code 11 is the scavenge fan sensor under the middle console, either the engine bay temp is below -30 degrees or above 180 degrees  or it's a fault with the sensor, disconnected or wiring fault.
Code 64 - not sure TBH, search revealed this - http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ ... id#p331631 - not hugely hepful as the poster never came back with any results, which is always frustrating

Pressure control solenoid is in the transmission but do not normally give problems electrically (which is all the Bongo's tranny ECU can detect), they are prone to mechanical failure making them fail hydraulically. Quite possible electrical or an old code. You need to clear both codes (I think you do it by disconnecting the battery for a while but am not 100% on this), after reconnecting the battery check for codes again before driving to ensure they have cleared then head out again & read when the hold light has flashed again. If you now only have one code then you know where to start looking or at least if they both come back you know they are not spurious so can look at wiring etc, could just be a connector somewhere that is going too high on its resistance when hot.

From the fact sheet:-
The automatic gearbox on the Bongo is a complex, electronically controlled
transmission unit. When a component fails, or the system operates incorrectly,
the transmission control module will generate a fault code and the 'Hold' light
on the instrument panel will flash. The Hold light will flash whenever the fault is
sensed, while the ignition is switched on. If the fault clears, the Hold light will no
longer flash, but the fault code will remain in the memory. If the fault remains
clear, the fault code will be deleted after the ignition has been switched on five
times.
I'll try this tomorrow and see if any fault codes remain.
5 times seems a bit quick, I must have done that in the last day or so already, so I'm guessing the fault must still be there- or would it mean 5 times in succession?

Just turned ignition 5x in succession, started the engine on the 6th turn, and the hold light flashes straight away- so must be a permanant fault now.
Checked the fault codes and still get 11 and 64.
Time to make some phonecalls!

Very strange, have you tried disconnecting the battery for a while, say 1/2 hr or so?

Not tried the battery yet.
Just got back from a short drive tho, light flashed for half a mile, then stayed off for about 4 miles.

Spoke to Dunnings in Weymouth- apparently they've done a few of these, 4 soleniods come in a pack, cost nearly £400. Sure I've seen that figure on here before!
Also spoke to an Auto specialist in Exeter, they said there are more faults that it could be, and would need to do further checks- £45 just to plug it in and see what else it is!!

Probably where I saw it then!

battery currently disconnected- will try it soon.

....battery reconnected, faults codes have cleared. :D Will have to wait now until the HOLD light starts flashing again to see if anything comes up!

Not at all unreasonable (although I have yet to find a scanner that will talk to a Bongo & all the Japanese info that I have here says to do that same as the fact sheet says) same as I charge.

It does annoy me when comments such as the above are made, the company will have invested £1000's on scanning equipment (we have in the region of 10k of scanning equipment) & then have to pay considerable sums of money we pay per year to keep it up to date. Then there is the years it takes to learn the trade - it doesn't come from a book, it comes from years of doing the job & getting in wrong quite often in the early days of a new type of transmission - & when we get it wrong who pays again. We do. So it is not unreasonable to pay for that hard earnt knowledge plus the time taken to do it (in my case I allow up to an hour to include a road test).

I sometimes have people in my shop who want to know what is wrong but refuse to pay for a diagnostic, people that that cannot be helped in my book as they are just after a free lunch.

Now I am going away to calm down.

Not intended to offend anyone. My apologies, I guess I should be wondering why none of the others have offered to do this, rather than taking £400 for doing something which maynot actualy solve the problem!
I worked in the motor trade for 12 years, so I am well aware of the way most things are diagnosed by computer now a days, as opposed to years gone by where if some thing went wrong you could strip it down or replace it!

Well, I eventually took my Bongo to DJ Transmissions in Plymouth.
I had the solonoid pack replaced, and now all is well again!!! :D
The hold light has stopped flashing, and I seem to have power back- I put my foot down and in comes the power- even on a climb!
Excellent service, and cost less than £260 all in. (previous quote £400)

All seems good again. :D

Glad it is all sorted OK. Makes a big difference when the gearbox uses all 4 gears!
