Thanks for all the advice
The foil wrapping was the answer.
It only took about 10 minutes
The method I used was as follows:
1. isolate which switch has a problem, by folding some paper & silding between the plunger & the metal spring part of the switch (I did it to both sides first just to check that the beeping & flashing would stop) then with the paper in on one side close the roof, if the warnings stop that is the faulty side.
2. remove the paper
3. get some thick foil, I used one of those mince pie cases (I haven't had milk from a glass bottle for decades)
4. cut a strip of foil about the same width as the length of the metal spring
5. fold the foil so you get the required thickness (could be trial & error here but it worked first time for me by folding in half 3 time to give a total of 8 layers of foil)
6. slide the foil over the metal spring
7. use a flat screw driver to push the plunger & compress the foil onto the spring
8. close the other switch using the paper as above to ensure that the warning still works when the roof is up
9. remove the paper, close the roof & check for silence
10. gloat in the fact the you fixed the problem so easily
