but will now not move ,its wt 2.5 auto.

several members suggested that i should check each wheel for stuck brake, which i did , and all wheels are free ,well they move by the amount of slack in the transmission, (why wo,nt they rotate 360 degrees by hand even in nuetral ?) but the van still wo,nt move , it tries to ,moves about the distance of the slack in the system ,then stops.

tried forward/reverse/forward/reverse , rocking it but that is no help

there are sooooo many "safety lockouts" on this van have i missed one maybe ????

it was all working perfectly before being parked up .

can anyone help please ????

Have you tried jacking 2 wheels off the ground at a time,ie rear then front.

They won't turn because they're linked by the driveshafts 8)

If the handbrake is not siezed on, is there any way the pawl that engages in P could be staying engaged (even partly) even when D and R are selected? Could it be that the pawl has broken off? Bongo nudged by another vehicle while it was parked in P maybe?

Only if there's a LSD fitted John 8)

Interesting Alan :? Mine isn't supposed to have an LSD, but wheel won't turn by hand (it's a 4WD) :? :?

If the park pawl were broken off then it would be more likely to just have no park, were the pawl return spring to have broken it could in theory stick in park, but I have never known these springs to break. It would take a lot more than a nudge to break the park mechanisim - I think not being able to turn the wheels would be the last of your worries!

Re. the LSD, the only experience I have had with them on Bongo's is with my current one - & you can tell it has an LSD when pulling away with quite a lot of lock on, it can judder & scrabbles when on gravel. I don't know if they all do this, I have replaced the oil with LSD oil & added Lubegard LSD suplement but it doesn't appear to have made any difference. It doesn't worry me - at least I know it is working!

I agree that if no LSD is fitted you should be able to turn one wheel - but of course if it is park then the propshaft can't turn so you would have to have it in neutral. If in Park then you could turn a non LSD car wheel with both rear wheels off the ground - the other wheel would turn the opposite direction.

When the propshaft is stationary and no LSD, then as you revolve, say, the offside wheel clockwise, the nearside will turn the opposite way (although clockwise looking from the nearside, if that makes sense) - sounds like you have a limited slip diff, assuming the handbrake isn't jammed 8)

Isn't that assuming both wheels are jacked up? :? I got the impression that bobngo was only jacking one wheel at a time, as was I when it wouldn't turn :? .

Yes I think that is what dandywarhol is saying.

If bongobob has a 4x4 then with one rear wheel jacked up & in park he won't be able to turn the wheel, just rock it back & forth taking up the backlash in the geartrain (same applies for a 4x2). If he were to try it in neutral & it is a 4x4 then he still may not be able to turn the wheel as the front & rear axles are linked through a viscous coupling in the 4x4 unit.

Jack up the which ever end is in question to get the wheels off the ground. Put the transmission in neutral and spin one of the wheels by hand.

If the opposite wheel spins in the same direction, you have a limited slip differential.

If the opposite wheel spins in the opposite direction, you have an open rear end.

this is the second time i,ve tried to answer this post, last time when i pressed "submit" everything i,d written just dissappeared ?????? and i,m a one finger typist so it takes ages !!!

so, yes its a 4 wheel drive, and when i had it jacked up ,only one wheel was jacked ,so LSD i guess

bdc , yes there is forward and reverse movement ,when selected, but only about 2 inches , (slack in drive chain ??)

tried the rocking trick, D to R ,R to D many times.

living alone i could not tell if any wheels were rotating ,so stuck a red tape to each wheel at bottom, then tried D to R, R to D ,again , one big bang , checked tapes and rear offside wheel only, has certainly moved at least 180 degrees or more .
nearside rear and fronts not moved

so that sort of confirms handbrake shoes stuck, tried more rocking at higher revs, but no success on nearside rear

now in the process of removing nearside rear wheel etc to free up hand brake shoes, this may by harder than it sounds???
anyone any ideas about that ,thought of using a paint stripping hot air gun on drum, and of coarse the usual adjustment with lump hammer !!!!

progress stopped for today due to cold/snow/darknes/and me being peed off !!!

won,t progress much tomorrow ,due at hospital for check on the new knee, which caused the 3month park up in the first place.!!!

So it seems it is the brakes after all! Sounds like you are halfway to sorting it - good luck with the other half and be cautious with the hot air gun and lump hammer [-o<
